Winter Olympics: Franjo von Allmen completes historic hat-trick at Milano Cortina with super-G gold as Marco Odermatt denied again

There was more Alpine skiing drama in the men’s super-G as Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen once again got the better of his team-mate Marco Odermatt to take gold. Odermatt was the heavy favourite but had to settle for bronze after a scruffy run as Von Allmen claimed another gold to go with his victories in the downhill and team combined. Switzerland’s Franjo von Allmen took the men’s super-G gold to complete a remarkable Winter Olympics hat-trick at Milano Cortina, which you can follow live on TNT Sports and discovery+, as Marco Odermatt once again missed out.
Odermatt was the favourite for the race but was pipped by his team-mate and had to settle for bronze.
Von Allmen added another gold to go with his downhill and team combined triumphs in what has been an historic Games for the 24-year-old - making history as the first alpine skier to win three gold medals in one Winter Olympics since 1968.
His time of 1:25.32 was enough to edge out USA’s silver medallist, Ryan Cochran-Siegle, by 0.13 seconds, with Odermatt a further 0.15 seconds adrift.
Von Allmen came out in the seventh bib and immediately looked like he would run Cochran-Siegle close.
A blistering final push saw him stop the clock 0.13 seconds ahead, usurping the American into the gold medal position.

All eyes turned to what Von Allmen's Swiss team-mate Odermatt, the super-G world champion, could come up with in response.
The 28-year-old came flying out of the blocks and was 0.10 seconds ahead of Von Allmen through the first intermediary.

But he lost speed throughout the run compared to his compatriot - reaching 112.8kph to Von Allmen's 117.76kph - and falling 0.04 seconds behind.
That left him needing to find something special on the run to the line, but after clashing with multiple gates, he once again missed out on gold.
He crossed the line in bronze overall, but 21st for the third intermediary and a whole 0.23 seconds behind Von Allmen for that section of the course - showing exactly where the race was won and lost.

Having finished fourth in the downhill and winning silver in the team combined events, beaten by Von Allmen to gold in both, it was another disappointing result for Odermatt.
Elsewhere, it was a case of equipment disaster for home hopeful Dominik Paris, who finally claimed his first Olympic medal in his fifth Games with bronze in the downhill.
His right ski flew off under minimal pressure mere moments after getting underway, meaning there was no hope of the 36-year-old adding a second medal to his tally.
Italian team-mate Giovanni Franzoni, a junior super-G World Champion, was unable to get among the medals as he did in the downhill, finishing sixth.
Austrian challengers Raphael Haaser and Vincent Kriechmayr finished fifth and seventh respectively, with Frenchman Nils Allegre coming fourth.
Odermatt 'wanted it so bad, he was forcing it'
The focus rightly was largely on gold medalist Von Allmen after he made history in his maiden Olympic Games, but there were also a lot of eyes on Swiss colleague Odermatt.
He has won the last four overall World Cups and is primed to win again in 2026, sitting at the top of all three disciplines he competes in - giant slalom, super-G and downhill.
He has 100 World Cup race podiums, 53 of which are gold and yet, when it comes to the Olympic Games, he has just one of each medal to show for his dominance.
Just how much he wanted to win his second gold, and first of these Games, was apparent in how he was racing, and Von Allmen himself looked sorry for beating him, according to TNT Sports commentator Ed Drake.

"Von Allmen almost looks apologetic at the fact he has got the better of Marco Odermatt again," he said at the conclusion of his run.
"The difficulties here in the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Games continue for Marco Odermatt. A shake of the head, he knows that he has missed the chance to take gold here today.
"He was so close, but just didn’t nail those last gates, got a tiny bit late and that was the difference - he wants it so bad, he was just forcing it."
TNT Sports pundit Charlie Guest put down Odermatt's failings to the "frantic" nature of the end of his run.
"It just became slightly frantic in an area of the course that we know you need to be smooth in," she said.
"Cochran-Siegle showed us that early on and my heart really does go out to Marco Odermatt because he was giving it everything he had, especially through that top section and frantic towards the bottom is probably the word to use for me today - he deserves it as well. The Olympics is a funny beast."
