China’s Zhang Boheng and Tang Chia-Hung of Chinese Taipei both claimed a rare shared bronze medal after a chaotic men’s high bar final that saw multiple gymnasts fall.
Shinnosuke Oka, the 20-year-old Japanese who claimed the all-around gold last week, established himself as men’s gymnastics’ newest star as he triumphed over Colombia’s Angel Barajas after both athletes scored 14.533.
Oka claimed the gold thanks to an execution tie-breaker, having scored 8.633 over Barajas’ 7.933.
Zhang and Tang were also tied for third place on 13.966, with both gymnasts making mistakes during their routines.
Tang was the first athlete to take on the bars and the first of many to fall – losing his grip on the bars after a release – but still managed to claim a strong score thanks to the difficulty of his routine.
Zhang looked to be on his way to a gold-medal-winning score in his run but stumbled on the mat on his dismount.
It left both Tang and Zhang with scores of 13.966, and with both also having the same scores for execution and difficulty, they each received a bronze medal.
For Oka, it was his third gold of the Games following his all-around victory and triumph in the team event.
His latest win came during a bizarre high beam final where several athletes fell off the bar or stumbled on their landing.
And that followed another strangely error-ridden final in the women’s balance beam, with Simone Biles one of many to fall.
The American superstar could only finish in fourth following her slip from the beam, with Italy’s Alice D’Amato becoming her country’s first ever gymnastics champion.
China’s Zhou Yaqin claimed silver, while Manila Esposito added to Italy’s success with bronze.
