Paris 2024: Team GB star Keely Hodgkinson qualifies for women's 800m semis, Joshua Cheptegei wins men's 10,000m gold

Team GB’s Keely Hodgkinson qualified for the women’s 800m semi-finals in a time of 1:59.31 at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. The British sensation won heat 4 as she began her bid to claim a maiden Olympic gold medal. She will be joined in the next round by team-mates Jemma Reekie and teenager Phoebe Gill.

Two-time European champion Hodgkinson is on a quest to win a maiden Olympic gold, and she moved a step closer by winning heat four in a time of 1:59.31 to qualify for Sunday’s semi-final.

It was a comfortable race for the 22-year-old British sensation as she crossed the line first ahead of the USA's Nia Akins and Benin’s Noelie Yarigo.

Reekie had set the tone by winning the opening heat in a blistering time of two minutes, having led from the start.

Seventeen-year-old Gill - Team GB’s youngest track athlete to compete in the Olympics in more than four decades – came through a tough heat to finish third in 1:58.83.

Uganda's Cheptegei wins 10,000m gold

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei set a new Olympic record to win the men's 10,000m gold.

Despite threatening to break his world record, Cheptegei had to settle for a blistering time of 26:43.14, with Ethopia’s Berihu Aregawi taking silver in 26:43.44 and American Grant Fisher's time of 26:43.46 enough for bronze.

"My collection for the track is really complete because I am the three-time world champion on the track," Cheptegui told Eurosport.

"I'm so excited and I really thank God because it took me a lot of courage and I thank God because he has made it possible."

Records smashed in 4x400m mixed relay

Earlier, the Team GB quartet of Sam Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson and Nicole Yeargin set a British record in the mixed 4x400m relay heats after finishing in a time of 3:10.61.

They finished first, ahead of the Netherlands and Italy, to qualify for Saturday’s final.

Meanwhile, the United States ran 3:07.41 to break a new world record and take their heat in stylish fashion.
