Harshit Rana took the final wicket soon after tea as Australia were dismissed for 238 in their second innings.

The result sees India take a 1-0 lead in the five-Test series as they seek to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the fifth time in a row.

They have now won five and lost just two of their last nine Tests in Australia.

"Very happy," said India stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah, who was named player of the match after taking eight wickets.

"We were put under pressure in the first innings but the way we responded was great. We were really well-prepared. I told everyone to keep faith in your ability."

Victory looked a formality for India at the start of the fourth day, with Australia struggling on 12-3 in pursuit of 534 for victory.

Australia soon lost their fourth wicket as Mohamed Siraj had Usman Khawaja (4) caught behind.

Siraj then dismissed Steve Smith (17) to leave Australia 79-5.

Travis Head (89) and Mitchell Marsh (47) offered some resistance as they countered and took Australia past 150.

But after both fell in quick succession, the end was in sight.

Washington Sundar dismissed Mitchell Starc (12), with Dhruv Jurel snapping up a sharp chance, before bowling Nathan Lyon for a duck.

Rana sealed the win with a brilliant slower ball that deceived Alex Carey (36).

The second Test is a day-night Test starting on December 6 in Adelaide.
