PRIOR FULL OF PRAISE FOR BETHELL
England weren’t quite on the money today with the bat, with captain Jos Buttler saying he feels they were 40 to 50 runs short of being genuinely in this game.
And TNT Sports pundit Matt Prior says England’s performance looked like one of a team, and more accurately a group of players, who haven’t played this format for quite a long time.

They’ll be hoping to use the rest of this series to get back up to speed ahead of the Champions Trophy, but will take some positives from the performance of Jacob Bethell, who really impressed the watching Prior:
"He strikes me as a very similar character as Joe Root when he first came into the team. Yes the ability, yes the shots, you take that as read if you’re playing for England… but the actual mental side, the maturity that he showed in this innings is very similar to a young Joe Root."

CLASSY INDIA GO 1-0 UP IN THE SERIES
India survived a late scare to wrap up a dominant victory in the opening match of the One Day International series against England, as Shubman Gill top-scored with a supreme 87.
Jos Buttler won the toss and opted to bat first, and it looked to have been an excellent decision when Phil Salt (43) and Ben Duckett (32) got England off to a rapid start in the first powerplay. But wickets fell all-too-frequently for England from thereon in.
Buttler (52) and Jacob Bethell (51) led the rebuild through the middle overs, but the kick on never came, with the exception of some late blows from Jofra Archer, and England were bowled out for a below-par 248 in 47.4 overs. Ravindra Jadeja returned the pick of the figures, bagging 3-26 from nine overs.
Some dangerous new-ball bowling from Archer and Saqib Mahmood briefly gave England hope, with the former working over Jaiswal before Mahmood had India skipper Rohit Sharma out cheaply.
But India’s classy middle order looked to be making relatively easy work of the chase, as Shreyas Iyer attacked with a quickfire 36-ball 59 before Gill and Axar Patel (52) registered their own half-centuries.
Three late wickets, including a beauty from Adil Rashid, added the slightest sense of jeopardy to India’s chase.
But Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja completed the job, wrapping up the win with four wickets and 11.2 overs to spare.

Jadeja finishes the job for India, finding the gaps with the field up to hammer Saqib through mid-on for four and then edging short of a diving Salt to win the game in slightly streaky fashion.
India won’t mind too much, they’ve wrapped this win up with 11.2 overs to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Livingstone is brought back and he very nearly bags Hardik as the all-rounder gets a leading edge that somehow squeezes high enough to fall safe beyond the grasp of the back-tracking bowler. It’s such a bizarre shot and outcome that everyone starts laughing.
Four runs come off the over, all in singles, and India need just eight more to win.

Hang on, what are India doing? Gill drives beautifully for four to start Saqib Mahmood’s latest over, but then tries to force it next ball and spoons a catch to Buttler in the ring, missing out on his century and giving England a late boost.
Ravindra Jadeja is the new batter, in at number eight, and India will be grateful for their impressive batting depth.

Adil Rashid bags another and England will be increasingly frustrated that they didn’t have slightly more runs to work with in this second innings.
It’s KL Rahul who departs this time, chipping a return catch back to the bowler.
Hardik Pandya is the new batter with India requiring just 24 runs to win with plenty of time and wickets in hand.
Hardik isn’t keen to hang around and he dumps Rashid over mid-on for six to end the over in style and get the crowd on their feet.

Mahmood gets another go with the ball as England keep on striving away even now that the game has gone. Just two singles come from his over.

England are having to go through the motions a bit here, knowing that the game is done. They’ll have learned plenty ahead of bigger tests to come, but India have outclassed them on the day and this game really does show the importance of runs of top-order runs in the 50-over format.
Adil Rashid barely raises a smile as he ends Axar’s innings with a lovely ball that spins through the gate and cleans up the left-hander. Axar seemed more impressed with that delivery than the bowler himself and smiles in appreciation.

Gill latches on to a short ball from Carse and hammers him away through midwicket for four more, bringing up the century stand between this pair.
And Axar gets in on the act at the end of the over, slamming Carse down the ground to bring up his own half-century.

Adil Rashid returns with the ball and sends down a maiden. It’s not going to change the outcome of this game but that is really nice bowling.

Carse has changed his boots and it seems to have helped him find some better flow. He sends down an improved over that concedes just two singles.

Gill tucks into Root this time, flicking him over forward square leg for four. The conclusion of this game is approaching rapidly.

England’s total was never likely to be enough on this surface and it’s really tested out their bowling attack, which has one fewer front-line options due to the balance of the XI. For this set-up to work England need their specialist bowlers to perform, but Brydon Carse in particular has been well off it today and his second go with the ball doesn’t start much better.
Axar drives him through cover for four and then ramps him superbly for four more over the head of the keeper.
Gill gets in on the act to finish the over with two more boundaries, the latter of which is a dismissive pull that underlines India’s dominance in this match.
India require just 48 more runs.

It’s extremely difficult for England to win from here and so perhaps that’s a factor in their experimentation, running through their all-rounder options as Joe Root comes into the attack. His over is a reasonable one, with India knocking it around to take five runs from it.

Gill is playing really nicely. He shows all his class with a lovely jab through midwicket for four and finishes the over with an absolute gem, cutting away a slower delivery for four more. Even a frustrated Archer is impressed with that shot.

It’s another over for Livingstone and India are happy to ease their way towards their target, milking his over with very little risk.

This game is almost a done deal, and so Buttler opts for his best option to try and pick up some crucial wickets, bringing back Archer.
He really worked over Jaiswal with the new ball and hits good pace early in this new spell, but India play him out relatively safely as five singles come off the over. Gill reaches his fifty in the process, his 14th half-century in the format.

Livingstone continues but his tidy over is ruined by a hittable ball last up that Gill drives superbly over cover for a one-bounce four.

The runs keep on flowing, this time as Gill sweeps Rashid for four.
He’s been struggling a little with cramp has the batter and that shot was a painful one for him, but he’s doing a solid job for his team.

Have England got the breakthrough? Liam Livingstone certainly thinks so, but Gill reviews and doesn’t look too concerned as he takes off his helmet and runs his fingers through his frankly magnificent hair.
There’s a reason why he wasn’t worried – DRS shows a big inside edge and the decision is overturned.
Axar rubs salt into Livingstone’s wounds with a drilled drive for four to end the over.

Rashid is getting a lot of turn but India are dealing with him well so far. He rips one past the outside edge of Gill’s bat to get England excited, but there’s no breakthrough and the visitors really need to conjure up some wickets here. India bat really deep and are in control of the game as things stand.

England turn to Liam Livingstone and his ability to turn it the other way, but he starts off a bit scratchy and is cut away for four.
He thinks he’s got Axar with a drag down, but Mahmood decides he can’t quite get to the catch and then makes a hash of the fielding to let it slide through for four more.

That’s big for England as Bethell thinks he’s got Iyer. The finger goes up as Iyer misses with a sweep, and the decision heads upstairs.
DRS shows three reds, it’s plumb, and Iyer walks off to a stunned silence.

India are in control of this chase thanks to this rebuilding partnership and the runs keep flowing as a late cut from Gill brings four more, this time off Adil Rashid.

England’s team selections means they will need to get overs out of their all-rounders, and so Jacob Bethell comes into the attack. He’s got real potential with the ball, but he’s raw, and a loose one is tucked away down the leg side by Iyer to bring up his half-century off just 30 deliveries.
He ends the over with the most delicate of late cuts for four more.

Four runs come from Adil Rashid’s latest over, as he manages to end the flow of boundaries.

The runs continue to flow for the majestic-looking Iyer, who cuts Carse away for four more to start the 12th over.
Gill gets in on the act, pulling for four more as the runs keep on flowing. This game is slipping away from England fast.

England decide it’s time for some spin, but Iyer doesn’t let up against the spin of Adil Rashid (despite a slightly lesser average against the turning ball) and picks up another boundary with a booming cut.

Saqib Mahmood’s spell with the new ball is over and in comes Brydon Carse, who played well in the T20s.
He’s slightly off line at the start of his spell and is punished in some style by Iyer, who sends him to the boundary three times, getting the crowd on their feet and offering a reminder as to why he’s one of the world’s most dangerous batters in this format.
Iyer is rattling along with a strike rate of more than 200.

Gill flicks Archer off his pads for a lovely four to start the over and finishes the over with a pull away to the boundary for four more. Both deliveries were slightly wayward as Archer strives for another breakthrough.

This is a dangerous pairing that could take the game away from England fast and Iyer keeps the runs flowing with a flick to the fine leg boundary for four more. That brings up the fifty.

Archer continues and the ball flicks down leg side, out of the reach of Salt, and away to the boundary. The umpire signals that those are leg byes.
Iyer’s eyes light up later in the over as he picks the line and dispatches Archer deep into the stand on the leg side for a spectacular six. Archer responds with a bouncer and Iyer leans back and ramps him away for another maximum. Brilliant batting.

England needed early wickets and they’re getting them! Saqib Mahmood strikes as India captain Rohit Sharma mistimes a flick off his legs and loops a catch straight to Liam Livingstone in the ring.

Shreyas Iyer is the new batter for India, and he too has a superb record in this format. He gets off the mark with an uppish drive that had England’s fielders interested for a split second. And he follows it up with a nice clip to the boundary.

Archer deserves this, he’s been outstanding with the new ball and finally gets the edge that he’s threatened throughout this spell, with Jaiswal feathering an absolute peach that he had to play. He was expensive at times in the T20 series, but Archer remains a huge weapon for England in the white-ball game.
Shubman Gill comes in at number three, with Virat Kohli not included today due to a knee injury. Having Gill at first drop isn’t exactly a weakness – his ODI record is sensational: 2328 runs in 47 matches at an average of 58.20.
Gill is cut in half by yet another beauty, with Archer frequently up above 90mph throughout this over.
India 19-0 (Jaiswal 15, Rohit 2) Target: 249 Overs: 4
Jaiswal flashes hard at Saqib and edges wide of second slip. England are attacking and they have the catching players in position, but it’s not quite paying off just yet. Jaiswal is flirting with danger that’s for sure, but if he can get through this new-ball Test he’ll look to kick on, and he shows how dangerous that could be with a beautiful straight drive back down past the bowler.
12 runs come from the over in all as India go up through the gears.

Archer at his best is magnificent to watch and he’s got Jaiswal in a spot of bother, beating him three times in succession, the last of which is an absolute peach, leaving the opener at 92mph. Good luck playing that.

You would have thought that a big part of the selector’s thinking in picking Saqib Mahmood in this England attack is his ability with the new ball and his wicket-taking strength in the powerplay.
He’ll be wanting to show that today, but is absolutely clobbered to the fence first up by a dominant Jaiswal, who has been a revelation in Test and T20Is for India, but is making his ODI debut today.
Jaiswal is looking to get on top of the England bowler and finds fresh air with two expansive attempted drives, both of which have the England cordon grimacing in frustration.

Jofra Archer takes the new ball for England and will know that his team need early wickets here. Expect a pretty attacking approach in this first powerplay from the English bowlers.

TNT Sport pundits were impressed with the approach of Jacob Bethell and his fifty in that first innings, particular in contrast to the approach of his more experienced lower-order colleague Liam Livingstone, who played a pretty horrible shot at an important stage of the innings.

THE STORY OF THE FIRST INNINGS
India require 249 to win in Nagpur having bowled England out in the series opener.
Jos Buttler (52) and Jacob Bethell (51) both hit half-centuries as England built towards a total that at least keeps them in the game at the midway point.
But India will be the happier of the two teams at the break. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for just 26 runs in his nine overs, while Harshit Rana also bagged three wickets on ODI debut, finishing with 3-53 from seven overs.
England will be frustrated not to have kicked on after a fast start from openers Phil Salt (43) and Ben Duckett (32), who put on 75 runs in 8.5 overs with some big hits early on.
But miscommunication between the pair saw Salt run out, and one wicket brought two more as Duckett and Harry Brook (0) quickly joined him back in the hutch as England lost three wickets in the space of eight balls.
Joe Root departed for 19 on his return to the ODI side, leaving England needing big runs from their lower middle order, and both Buttler and Bethell delivered, playing calmly to each reach fifty during a consolidating phase through the middle overs.
Bethell’s role became increasingly pivotal as wickets fell around him, with Buttler’s wicket followed by the departure of Liam Livingstone (5) and Brydon Carse (10) to misjudged attacking shots. But Jadeja returned to prise out the settled batter and ensure that England wouldn’t kick on towards 300 at the death.
Some big hits late on from Jofra Archer (21* from 18 balls) lifted England, but there were still 14 deliveries of the available innings remaining when the final wicket fell, with England all out for 248.
ENGLAND ALL OUT FOR 248

Saqib Mahmood, stumped KL Rahul bowled Kuldeep Yadav, 2 (4)
India stick with spin as Kuldeep comes back for what will be his final over. Saqib does well to get off strike first ball and give Archer a chance to have a swish. And swish he does, sweeping well for four.
He doesn’t quite catch a big hit into the leg side and has to make do with a single, and that’ll be the last of the runs for England as Saqib charges down the wicket, misses completely, and is stumped.

Adil Rashid, bowled Ravindra Jadeja, 8 (16)
You don’t see spin this late in a One Day International innings too often, but it’s the right call from India.
Jadeja continues to spear his deliveries in, not giving the batters any room to free their arms, and Rashid in the end tries something creative, looking to sweep and playing all around it as the ball turns into the stumps.
It’s outstanding bowling from a master of his craft.
Saqib Mahmood is the new batter and he picks up a single to end the over, meaning he’ll keep the strike. India won’t mind that too much.
England 239-8 (Rashid 7, Archer 15) Overs: 46
Clever from India as they stick with spin to try and restrict England’s tail. Three runs come off it from Axar, and India have enough overs up their sleeve to stick with the slower stuff all the way if they wish.
England 236-8 (Rashid 4, Archer 15) Overs: 45
Archer wants pace on the ball for his big hits and decides to block out Jadeja, knowing that he’ll have more suitable bowling to come. It’s a maiden for the highly-economical Jadeja.

Archer decides there is not much point scrapping around and decides to take on the pace of Hardik. Given the current total and lack of wickets in hand it’s probably the right approach, and it comes in style.
He starts with a ferocious pull that clears the rope on the bounce, follows it up with a monster six that flies over deep square leg, and then lazers a drive straight back down the ground for four more. 16 runs come off the other, with Archer pulling away for a single off the final ball to keep the strike. There’s a brief pause at the end of the over due to the umpire miscounting and thinking there’s a ball left.

Jacob Bethell, lbw Ravindra Jadeja, 51 (64)
India appeal for lbw against Bethell and review, and it does for the England youngster.
There’s no edge on his missed sweep, the ball pitched in line, and ball-tracker has it hitting the wickets cleanly. Three reds.
You can see why the umpire didn’t give that though, it hit Bethell on the hip and didn’t look quite right, but it’s out and England have lost their last recognised batter.
Jofra Archer is the new batter.

Bethwell drives Shami wonderfully for four and finishes the over with a dab to mid-off that gives him the single to reach fifty for the second time in ODIs. This is a mature and impressive knock from such an inexperienced batter.
England 211-7 (Bethell 44, Rashid 1) Overs: 41
India celebrate as the finger goes up for a caught behind against Adil Rashid off Kuldeep. The England man looks a bit bemused, has a chat with Bethell and then reviews, and the replays don’t pick up any hint of an edge. The decision is overturned. It’s quite clear he didn’t think he hit that, and the only confusion is why he didn’t just review straight away. Maybe he’s just super polite.
WICKET! England 206-7 (Bethell 40, Rashid 0) Overs: 40
Brydon Carse, bowled Mohammed Shami, 10 (18)
The 200 comes up and Carse glances a Shami bounced extremely fine and all the way to the boundary for four.
But his stay in the middle comes to an abrupt end as he has his weight back after a string of short balls and is cleaned up by a fuller delivery that he attempted to swing into the on side. Good bowling, good captaincy and England are seven down.

A misfield rewards Bethell’s proactive sweep with a boundary off the final ball of Kuldeep’s over.

Liam Livingstone, caught KL Rahul bowled Harshit Rana, 5 (10)
Rana gets the breakthrough as Livingstone takes the bait in a big, big way.
He charges down the wicket two balls after struggling with a short delivery and attempts to hook another bumper all the way to Mumbai, almost heaving himself off his feet. The intent was certainly there, but the execution wasn’t and he gets a fine edge that flies through to the keeper.
Is that the worst dismissal of the bunch? Yes, yes it is.
Brydon Carse joins Bethell in the middle.
England 182-5 (Bethell 29, Livingstone 5) Overs: 35
Kuldeep comes into the attack to try and target Livingstone’s weakness against spin – his record against the slower bowling is distinctly worse than his stats when facing pace.
Some slightly odd fielding from Shami entertains Jadeja in the deep as he watches the seamer trot alongside the ball, effectively shepherding it for 20 yards.
A brilliant bit of fielding in the ring denies Bethell a boundary off the final ball of the over.
England 178-5 (Bethell 28, Livingstone 2) Overs: 34
India decide to tempt Livingstone with some pace first up and he does look to be proactive against Rana, not quite middling anything.
Bethell does middle one to finish the over though, guiding the finest of cuts all the way to the boundary. That’s a classy shot that shows why England are so excited about this youngster’s potential.

Buttler hangs his head in frustration as he gets in a mess looking to sweep Axar and spoons a top edge straight to the fielder at short fine leg. It’s a shot that looks absolutely horrible, but it’s clear what he was trying to do, taking advantage of the poor delivery to whip it away into the leg side… he just got it all wrong. Did it stay slightly low too?
Either way, it’s bad news for England as the players head for drinks. Liam Livingstone will join Bethell in the middle after the break.

Slow and steady from England as they continue to consolidate against Hardik. It’s not hugely pretty, but it’s much needed, and it goes some way to addressing the narrative that England’s white-ball team only know one way to bat. It also shows exactly why Buttler is slated to come in at number five in this side, and will be a boost to his own confidence as he looks to reassert his dominance in the format after a pretty horrible showing in the last ODI World Cup.
FIFTY! England 165-4 (Buttler 50, Bethell 19) Overs: 31
Buttler knocks Axar for another single and that’s his fifty, brought up off just 58 balls despite hitting only four boundaries so far.
A rippling of applause from the home crowd recognises a classy half-century.
England 162-4 (Buttler 48, Bethell 18) Overs: 30
Hardik is fuming as a quick single brings up the fifty partnership for this pair. The bowler gestures at the fielders, but really that’s probably more in frustration at not having an extended go against the less experienced batter.
Teams typically home to double their score from the 30-over mark, and England will be absolutely delighted if they manage that from here.
England 159-4 (Buttler 46, Bethell 17) Overs: 29
This middle-over phase is a crucial part of an ODI innings, but it’s also one of the reasons why the format has struggled for cut-through compared to T20 cricket. The home crowd try to create their own excitement as England rebuild, slowly but surely, giving themselves a solid platform to potentially launch off.
Six runs come off Axar’s over, with four of them coming in singles.
England 153-4 (Buttler 42, Bethell 15) Overs: 28
Any frustration that Bethell may have had about his slow scoring is eased as he latches on to a short ball from Hardik and hooks it fine and all the way for six. That’s a classy shot and it brings up the 150 for England.
England 145-4 (Buttler 41, Bethell 8) Overs: 27
Bethell can’t take advantage as Axar drops one short on his return, with a big swish only yielding a miscued single. Three runs come off the over. Bethell is either giving himself time with the game in a tricky state, or he’s getting bogged down, depending on your point of view. I’m keen to give the youngster credit and say it’s the former.
England 142-4 (Buttler 39, Bethell 7) Overs: 26
Four singles come off Shami’s over as this England pair keep things ticking over. It’s not thrilling stuff, that’s certain, but it’s important to grind out a partnership and take the innings deep after losing those four wickets. Sensible batting you could even say (shh, nobody tell the Bazball critics!).
England 138-4 (Buttler 37, Bethell 5) Overs: 25
Jadeja has extremely economical figures and his latest over is knocked for three singles.
He's bowling nicely and looking good while doing it too, with "one of the best haircuts in cricket" according to Swann on commentary. Yes, we are into that slightly subdued part of the innings.
England 135-4 (Buttler 36, Bethell 3) Overs: 24
Shami gets a run out through the middle overs and he has Bethell swaying out of the way from a well-targeted bouncer, with KL Rahul not holding it cleanly to allow England to run a bye. Just two runs come off the over.
England 133-4 (Buttler 35, Bethell 3) Overs: 23
More runs for Buttler as he flicks Jadeja through midwicket for four. The bowler is encouraged by a very strange shot from Bethell later in the over as he gets in a mess trying to paddle sweep and ends up gloving the ball at his own feet.
England 126-4 (Buttler 29, Bethell 2) Overs: 22
That’s a pressure-relieving over for England as Kuldeep gets it a bit wrong, offering Buttler some width that he takes advantage of to hit the first boundary in eight overs, punching off the back foot for four. And a drag down is dispatched behind square for a second boundary of the over.
England 117-4 (Buttler 18, Bethell 1) Overs: 21
Spin continues from both ends and Jadeja is taken for just three singles off another quick and tight over.
"It’s a dream time to be a spin bowler now," says Graeme Swann on commentary about the match situation.
England 114-4 (Buttler 18, Bethell 1) Overs: 20
England’s sights are set much lower now after losing all of their top four inside 20 overs. There’s plenty of time left in the innings, and they’ll be relieved to have opted for the more batting-heavy balance of the side, but after these two there’s just Liam Livingstone as a recognised batter and then it’s into the bowlers.
Buttler and Bethell plkay accordingly, keeping the ball on the deck off Kuldeep.

Joe Root, lbw Ravindra Jadeja, 19 (31)
Jadeja picks up a huge wicket and Joe Root has to go. He’s struck straight in-front by a quicker delivery that darted back in at that England batter and the finger goes up, but Root reviews.
There’s no hint of an edge on DRS and the ball tracking says it is just clipping the top of middle stump, umpire’s call, and Root gives a wry smile and a shake of the head as he makes way.
Jacob Bethell was initially slated to come in at seven, but given the situation of the game it’s he who comes in at six for England, batting ahead of Liam Livingstone.
England 110-3 (Root 19, Buttler 15) Overs: 18
India will be happy with the lack of boundaries, but this little phase of the game is also exactly what England would have been looking for after those three quick wickets.
Root and Buttler rotate the strike well as six runs come off the over in all.
England 104-3 (Root 15, Buttler 13) Overs: 17
Jadeja rattles through another over and England continue to accumulate. They have the leeway for this relatively quiet period thanks to the rapid start in that first powerplay.
THE RETURN OF JOE ROOT
Joe Root is playing in pretty trademark fashion here, although the England star has credited coach Brendon McCullum for changing his mindset with the bat over recent years.
"He's opened my eyes to looking at the game slightly differently, which at 31 or 32 years old, when Baz came in, is a really refreshing thing.
"To marry that with the experience that I already had was really quite exciting. I feel it's added quite a lot to my own game, about how you look at managing different bowlers.
"Whether it's where you stand, or whether you create an angle. It's about being proactive and trying to get ahead of the game in many respects.
"Before that, generally, I'd be quite technical and start thinking about shoulders, feet, head, whatever – whereas I think Baz's big strength is very situation-based in the way that he thinks about the game, which I think is brilliant."

INDIA’S TEAM NEWS
India may have moved away from many of their experienced big-name players in the T20 format, to great success, but the qualities of their biggest stars mean they remain very much front and centre of the approach in the 50-over game.
The big news at the toss was that Virat Kohli has a knee issue that rules him out of playing, but there’s still a very strong batting line-up as Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill make up a dauntingly high-quality top four.
Jasprit Bumrah’s back injury means he doesn’t feature in the XI, but Harshit Rana and Mohammed Shami are strong pace options to lead the attack.
India are overflowing with spin options, with Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav coming in to join Axar Patel in the XI. And there is depth in the team too, with batting options right down to number eight, explosive finishers in the lower-middle order, and six front-line bowling options for Rohit to pick from.
This is a seriously quality XI and India will rightly be the favourites to win the Champions Trophy with this set-up.

Kuldeep comes into the attack for the first time and Root shows his class against spin as he reverse sweeps him for four, following that up with a hard-run three (Ben Duckett, take note).

England couldn’t ask for a more experienced pair to lead this rebuild and they knock Hardik around for four singles, the last one being a slightly fortuitous inside edge off Buttler.

First runs for Buttler as he finishes a Rana over with a gorgeous pull that runs away to the rope.

It’s very much rebuild time for England after that flurry of wickets, which all started when Duckett sold Salt up the river with the run out. Root knows that it’s all about consolidation at this stage of the innings and so plays out a maiden off Hardik.

It’s a horrible mix-up from the England pair to end this damaging opening partnership, with Iyer’s return throw finding KL Rahul with both batters up the other end. Salt has to go and he’s not happy about it.
Joe Root is the new batter and he defends the final ball of Hardik Pandya’s over.

India turn to spin to try and stem the flow of runs from England in this fast start, but Salt continues to attack and drives Axar straight back past him for four more. Back-to-back sweeps from Duckett keep the boundaries flowing as England keep their foot to the floor. 15 runs come off the over.
England 56-0 (Salt 34, Duckett 21) Overs: 7
Shami continues and England are gifted another boundary when Kuldeep is duped in the outfield by a slice off the bat of Duckett that spins past him on the bounce. That makes a fielder look pretty silly but is much harder to read than it appears.
England 52-0 (Salt 34, Duckett 17) Overs: 6
Oof, Phil Salt is up and running in style, this is a huge over. He starts with a top edge off Rana that flies away for six and follows it up with an uppish drive that hits the gap and runs away for four.
Rana tries a slower ball next up, but Salt sees it coming and sweeps for six more before pulling over midwicket to bring up 20 runs off the over.
The home crowd are making a low buzz, concerned about how these runs are flowing, and that buzz becomes a louder hum as Salt finishes the over with the best of the lot, a humungous pull for six that sails deep into the stands over square leg. 26 runs come off the over in all.

Shami continues and Duckett gets away with a thick inside edge that could easily have ended up back on the stumps. He’s largely sticking with a line outside off stump, angled in, with a blanket of fielders on that side in the ring, but Duckett finds a solution, opening himself up with active foot movement and drilling one away to the rope. He very nearly falls off the last ball of the over, mishitting a chip into the leg side that drops agonisingly over the head of Hardik and runs away for four. The reaction of the India fielders tells you that was a chance.
England 17-0 (Salt 8, Duckett 9) Overs: 4
Excellent lines from Rana, tucking Salt up, and it’s a second maiden of the innings for India.

Aggression against the new ball was always likely to be England’s approach in this series and they get up and running against Shami too, with Duckett driving him wonderfully back down the ground for four more. Shami’s getting the ball to talk here too and whips past the outside edge of Duckett to finish the over with three dots.
England 11-0 (Salt 8, Duckett 3) Overs: 2
Harshit Rana is in the XI proper on this occasion and England tuck into his first over. Duckett is denied a boundary by some excellent fielding in the deep from Jadeja, but England run three and Salt finishes the over with two super aggressive fours, the first slashed through cover and the second hammered over midwicket. The outfield is slow but the ball still makes it.

Mohammed Shami takes the new ball and starts with a maiden, and a beautiful one at that, beating the edge of Salt on two occasions.

ENGLAND TEAM NEWS
The England XI was named a day in advance and, with Jamie Smith unavailable, there was little in the way of surprises in the batting order, with Joe Root the one addition from the T20 squad and coming straight back in at number three.
In terms of balance, England have sensibly switched to having a stronger batting all-rounder at number seven compared to their T20 selection, with Jacob Bethell slated to bat in that role but with flexibility to come in earlier if required.
The most competitive selection would have been for the final pace bowler alongside Brydon Carse and Jofra Archer, and Saqib Mahmood has been preferred to Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson and Jamie Overton in that three-strong pace attack.
England’s balance means they will need to find at least ten overs from their top seven, with Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell and Joe Root the additional bowling options available to captain Jos Buttler.

ENGLAND HAVE WON THE TOSS
England have won the toss in Nagpur and have opted to bat first. The last three One Day Internationals at this venue were all between India and Australia, with the home side winning on all three occasions. The surface in Nagpur hasn’t always been the best-suited to touring teams, but the wicket is a new one for this match and local ground staff say that the aim was to create a hard surface that should yield runs with a bit of grip for the spinners.

AN IMPORTANT SERIES FOR ENGLAND
As much as the T20 matches were useful for England to see what their options are in the shortest-format of the game, this tour of India was primarily scheduled as preparation for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, and so it is these three One Day International fixtures that form the most important element of the tour.
India are the best white-ball team in the world, ranked No. 1 in both the ODI and T20 rankings, and are even more formidable in their home conditions, and so for England this is as challenging a set of fixtures as they could have asked for ahead of a 50-over tournament where they will need to hit the ground running in a tricky group with Australia, South Africa and Afghanistan.
The conditions in Pakistan won’t be identical to the surfaces on this tour, but England will almost certainly be faced with a trial by spin in the Champions Trophy, and how they manage to cope against India’s world-class spin attack will be crucial to both their success in this series and in the Champions Trophy itself.
