Women's World Cup: Inspired Heather Knight helps England survive scare to beat Bangladesh in thrilling encounter

England top the table after Bangladesh victory

Former captain Heather Knight steered England to a surprisingly tense victory over Bangladesh, helped by Charlie Dean.

Knight scored 79 to take England to their target of 179 with 23 balls to spare, after England had earlier bowled out Bangladesh.

England’s bowlers all combined to limit Bangladesh to just 178 runs after Nat Sciver-Brunt won the toss and elected to bowl first. Sophie Ecclestone was the pick of the England attack, delivering figures of 3-24 from her 10 overs, as she was ably supported by Dean, Alice Capsey and Linsey Smith who all picked up two wickets apiece.

Bell got the other wicket for England, as Bangladesh stuttered in attack and looked happy to block for much of their innings.

Sharmin Akhter made 30 at the top of the order to try and build a base for Bangladesh, with Sobhana Mostary shining in the middle order as she grabbed a maiden fifty.

But it was Rabeya Khan who really dragged her team to a respectable total, her cameo of 43 from 27 balls at the end of the innings the highlight by far from a confused batting performance.

Amy Jones went early in the chase, surviving one lbw chance in the opening over but not a second. Tammy Beaumont followed cheaply to leave England rocking, but the current and former captains Sciver-Brunt and Knight steadied the ship.

Sciver-Brunt was the most fluent, but once she went, Sophia Dunkley and Emma Lamb both fell cheaply to leave England reeling once again.

When Capsey went for 20, nerves could have really jangled in the England camp, with Bangladesh looking fired up in the field as captain Nigar Sultana Joty encouraged her bowlers onto what would have been a shock victory.

But Knight played with more and more fluency as the innings wore on, well-supported by Dean who made 27, as England's experience enabled them to grab their second victory from their first two matches at the World Cup, which leaves them on top of the group with the top four to progress to the semi-finals.

Player of the match Knight has her say

"Can’t say I’ve been out and reprieved three times in an innings before. We made it hard for ourselves but the main thing in a World Cup is to get over the line. It wasn’t easy in the start, first proper game in the idle since March-April, so I got used to the turn a bit more and it was a lot easier as it went on," says Knight in her post-match interview.

She played brilliantly to get England over the line - she was the rock in the middle of what could have been a very nervy run chase.

England beat Bangladesh by four wickets

Dean hits the first ball into the outfield and that is the win for England! It was nervy, it was tight but it is two from two for Sciver-Brunt's side.

Knight ends on 79 unbeaten, Dean on 27.

England's 182-6 made it past Bangladesh's total of 178 in 46.1 overs.

England 178-6 (46 overs) - Dean 23, Knight 79

Six to win. Dean grabs an easy single at the start of the over.

Five to win. Knight goes up in the air, just clears the inner circle and grabs two.

Three to win. Knight wants to head to the ice bath. She sweeps for the boundary but only gets one.

Two to win. A quick single leaves Knight on strike for the final ball of the over.

But it is a dot ball!

Just 15 runs left to get. England opt for a quick single, Dean keen to get Knight back on strike.

England then get an easy two, the target coming down fast.

Knight flicks the next one into the deep for another two.

And the final ball is an inside edge that goes all the way to the boundary...

The England dug out is looking pretty relaxed out there now.

But Fahima closes out her 10 overs with a maiden.

She has bowled superbly well tonight, ending with figures of 10-2-16-3.

Boundary! Knight brings out the reverse sweep and that was always going for four.

That proves an expensive over, with four singles as well.

The target is flying down now, 16 off 42 balls required.

Justt he single there - Bangladesh might be struggling for the breakthrough, but they are not making this easy for England.

24 left from 48 balls, as Joty goes a little quiet behind the stumps.

Knight sweeps and gets another boundary, and that really has made some heads drop for Bangladesh.

Add in a couple of singles, and 26 are now needed from 54.

Those four wickets look a touch ask for Bangladesh now.

A maiden over, just what Joty needed to try and wrest back some control.

32 runs from 60 balls.

A few more singles knocked off there, England happy now to really take the momentum away from bangladesh. Heads are not exactly dropping, but Joty is certainly not as vocal as she was.

Knight gets her 50, from 86 balls. A good knock this by the former captain, who survived a couple of tight calls early on and has very much ridden her luck out there.

Another boundry for Knight and suddenly the target is not that far away...

This partnership is worth 34 off 39 balls, and has really steadied England outt here.

Knight goes for it! But while the ball lands clear of a fielder, it dies on the surface and doesn't make the boundary. Two run.

Knight picks off a single, and Bangladesh need a breakthrough. The target is coming down too easily, albeit without much speed.

Fahima is on to try and get the breakthrough. She finds spin and uneven bounce, with Dean just able to pick off a single on the final ball of the over.

Nahida is into her seventh over now. Knight cuts for a single to move to 40.

And Dean then gets in on the act, cutting herself for four! She picks up a single, leaving Knight on strike for the last ball of the over, which she cannot tuck away.

That target is coming down - and Bangladesh need a wicket, and fast.

Scooped over the bolwer's head and down the ground for four. Maghla is left to gaze behind her as the ball disappears. She picks off a single on the fourth ball to rotate the strike.

Three singles and a much needed boundary from Shorna's over there for England, as they continue to slowly creep towards that total set by Bangladesh earlier.

Dean is the new batter. She has a high score of 47 not out, but tonight she needs to support her former captain out there.

England still need 74 runs to win, Bangladesh need four wickets for the upset.

Another couple of singles. England seem content to do this the slow way, counting that a win is a win.

One single apiece, nerves settled and Bangladesh are starting to look at how many runs they have left to play with.

77 needed.

England 100-5 (28 overs) - Capsey 19, Knight 25

Maghla comes back into the attack. Joty has a tough task here - does she bowl out her wicket taking bowlers, in the hopes of breaking through to England's tail proper? Or save them for the end of the innings... When it might be too late?

A single from the first and last ball brings up the century of runs for England.

They need 79 to win from 22 overs (132 balls) with five wickets in hand.

England 98-5 (27 overs) - Capsey 18, Knight 24

Shorna is into the attack now. But her first ball sits up nicely and Capsey cuts to the boundary for four.

She tightens things up, two more singles are conceded but Joty continues to encourage from behind the stumps.

England 92-5 (26 overs) - Capsey 12, Knight 23

Fahima bowls another tight over, letting just the one run slip by which puts Capsey on strike for the next over.

Rabeya gets taken for five from that over. This is all about Bangladesh right now. England might be ticking off the runs, but until they get much, much closer they will not feel safe.

Halfway through the innings, and technically England are ahead of what they need. But they are five down, and into the bowlers.

Three singles from the over as England look to steady the ship. They have the balls in hand, but only five wickets to play with.

But they have their former captain Knight at the crease, so there is plenty of experience there for her to marshal things along with Capsey, who plays an attacking brand of cricket.

Capsey gets off the mark, no signs of any nerves from her.

But England are in all sorts of trouble here. Fahima has done the damage of late, with 3-12 from her six overs.

Marufa did the early damage with 2-28.

Lamb goes! England need to get going, but not like that - she spoons one to mid on. Oh dear another soft dismissal. Or is it? he umpires want to check the catch - which was clean, but Nahida rolls on the floor after catching and they just check her fingers were underneath the ball at all times.

The third umpire is happy with the catch and Lamb goes!

That's more like it! Knight has had enough of the pressure cooker, and she comes down the pitch, attcaking a shorter ball and clears the ropes for six.

There is a breif review to check Lamb had grounded her bat at the non-striker's end which she had, and the over goes for just those six runs.

England are ticking over here, but much like Bagladesh, they are strugling both to find the boundary, and knock off enough singles to really break the rhythm of the bowlers.

A maiden from Rabeya, as England slowly try to recover from losing four top order wickets. Both openers have gone as has the captian, and Dunkley for a duck.

Lamb is the new batter to the crease, with a rebuild job required out there.

Oh is this another? Bangladesh appeal and the umpire gives it! It is the new batter Dunkley who has been given out lbw. On field decision was out.

Okay then, no bat, impact in line, wicket is umpire's call so.... She has to go.

Wicket! England 69-3 (18.1 overs) - Sciver-Brunt 32, Knight 15

Oh! Pressure building, runs restricted and the captain goes. Sciver-Brunt was the player in form in the middle, but she goes for 32 after chipping to mid wicket in what is a soft dismissal.

Rabeya's first over was expensive, but her second is much better. She gives away just two runs, England moving to 69 in their pursuit of 179.

No reason to worry for England yet, but they would like the run rate to increase slightly out there.

Murufa has gone off - hopefully not for too long, as she livened up the start of this innings no end.

Fahima gives away just one run in that over, and Bangladesh are really making a fight of this out there.

Another tidy over from Bangladesh, and England are not getting away here at all. Sciver-Brunt is in good form out there, but Knight looks to be struggling. She is trying to get anything away, but keeps getting pinned on the crease.

A maiden over in the end, and a lucky one for Knight.

That catch was one of those that looks good with the naked eye, but when you slow it down frame by frame... A difficult decision for sure for the third umpire to make.

Fahima is into the attack after that drinks break. Knight is on strike, and just has a little look.

But third ball does the trick, and Knight has to go! She scoops one to cover. What a catch that was too, milimetres off the ground.

Hang on, the umpires initially gave that as out but send it upstairs when they realise how close it was.

And the third umpire reverses the deision. Knight survives, again.

Nahida is bowling this one. And Sciver-Brunt sweeps down to fine leg for two.

That is all that is adoing there, as drinks come on.

Another quite over, where England rotate the strike. No fireworks yet but none are needed - this is a relatively small run chase.

England 59-2 (12 overs) - Sciver-Brunt 26, Knight 12

Maghla is into her third over, and she has been very economical so far.

These two are adept at rotaing the strike though, both incredibly experienced campaigners.

Four singles off the over.

England 55-2 (11 overs) - Sciver-Brunt 24, Knight 10

Rabeya, who had that brilliant knock at the end of the Bangladesh innings, is into the attack. But her first ball goes for four, through not fault of her own - poor fielding there.

Two singles follow, two dots and then Sciver-Brunt gets another boundary for what turns into an expensive over there.

That ends the powerplay then, with England needing 134 from 40 overs, or 240 balls.

First ball from Marufa, short, wide and Sciver-Brunt fires that through offside for a boundary.

Two dot balls follow, and then Sciver-Brunt opens up with two more fours.

Marufa's radar went a little missing there. Big over for England. Sciver-Brunt is up for this after being a little expenisve with the ball.

Just the one from the over by Maghla, as things do indeed calm down slightly.

So, England have lost two wickets in their chase of 179, which initially looked a below par score here in Guwahati.

But Bangladesh are bowling extremely well, and fielding solidly as well.

Marufa nearly gets an edge on the last ball too. What an over from the youngster.

England in all sorts of bother here - they need to calm this one down with a few boundaries and take the sting out of it, as it is turning into a pressure-cooker out there in the middle.

Knight gets a repreive, that ball was turning and missing by quite a long way there. She survives.

Bangladesh are chasing down everything in the field - and they need to, with a modest total to defend. They are showing better energy fielding than they did running between the wickets.

And now Knight is given out lbw!

She reviews... This is a huge moment in the game.

The ball hits Beaumont's front pad and Bangladesh appeal. It is given not out, but they are quick to review this one.

And it is hitting!

Beaumont is out! Marufa dropped her in the second over, now she has her quarry. Both openers gone for England.

Beaumont opens up with a boundary, a cut shot that goes directly between the fielders.

Nahida coughs up another boundary too to Knight, as England keep the scoreboard ticking over nicely.

England 17-1 (5 overs) - Beaumont 8, Knight 4

Marufa to continue. A single and a wide from it, and she gets excited by the last ball - a slower one that drifted past the outside of the bat. No review and England are 17-1 chasing 179 to win.

England 15-1 (4 overs) - Beaumont 7, Knight 4

Beaumont cashes in, the ball is too full from Nahida and it is crunched to the boundary.

A single follows, putting Knight back on strike. Two dot balls and England look to have steadied the ship after the early wicket of Jones.

Knight puts that scare behind her and punches one through point. Tectbook stroke. That is more like it from England.

Knight is given out! But she reviews. It was a huge appeal by Bangladesh, but did Knight get an edge onto her pad? She's been given out lbw. Oh that is tight, the ball looks to have just clipped the pad before the bat. It is not lbw as it pitched outside off, but the third umpire wants to check whether she might have been caught instead.

"There is nothing conclusive to show it hit the bat," says the third umpire and the decision is reversed!

That was really tight.

England 6-1 (2 overs) - Beaumont 2, Knight 0

No! Bangladesh drop one, it is Marufa who bowled the last over at mid cover. That wasn't quite a sitter, but it was an easy chance. What a moment. Beaumont survives.

Nahida bowls the second by the way. And it is a maiden.

A busy first over. Two wides in the first three balls as Marufa struggles to find her rhythm. Beaumont gets a single to hand the strike to Jones, who is clipped on the pad.

There is a huge appeal - the umpires say no and Bangladesh do not review. Ball tracker shows it was hitting leg, but there might have been the faintest of inside edges.

Another wide follows, Jones gets a single and then Beaumont trickles one down leg for another single.

And then Jones is given out! She has a chat to Beaumont, who says to walk so she does...

England need 179 to win

We will be back momentarily for England's run chase. They need 179 to win their second match in the ground stage of this World Cup against an obdurate Bangladesh side who stuck in well there.

But have they got enough runs on the board? They look a little light - but if England lose quick wickets, anything would happen.

Bangladesh all out for 178

So, England bowl Bangladesh out for 178 runs from 49.4 overs. That total does not look enough, but the pitch did spin and the sun has long since set, so we'll have to see how England get on here.

Rabeya finishes not out on 43 from 27.

Mostary top scored with 60 there.

Rabeya opens up with a six! She clears Bell at long on, despite the bowler's height. And the next ball is swept for four. Smith needs to steady this.

But then Rabeya takes a single - an odd decision.

And that decision proved ill-founded, when Maghla is caught next ball.

Capsey again, having taken two in her last over.

But she opens with a loose ball, and Rabeya puts that away.

And she gets on one knee and has another go at finding the boundary - but picks out Lamb who... Is that a drop? Yes, she didn't pick the ball up and stuttered, and by the time she dived the ball dropped just through her fingers. A chance goes begging to end the innings.

And then England review. It is an lbw chance, but the ball did get the edge, so England lose that one.

No wicket, but not many runs either. Two to go.

Capsey is into her seventh over.

Two singles and a wide in the first four balls. There is an appeal next up for leg before, but the umpires are not interested. But this late in the innings, Sciver-Brunt goes for the review.

It was to Mostary, bat well in front of pad and no edge. It hit just above the pad... And that is hitting!

Mostary has to walk.

A full toss from Smith, that was a terrible ball and Rabya smashes that back down the ground. Deserved treatment.

This is a great cameo from Rabeya to drag Bangladesh to something more reasonable of a total.

And then she trickles one off the edge down to the boundary as well.

Ecclestone is onto her last over.

The running between the wickets has not been fantastic this innings, but this is better from Rabeya, who is forcing the issue. She runs two twos and also grabs a single to keep the scoreboard moving.

Mostary takes a single off the first ball of Capsey's over, so she is okay with Rabeya being on strike then.

And that is why! Rabeya sweeps her first ball for four, nearly down on one knee. Capsey was not expecting that, based on her facial expression.

And she does the same again! This time down towards cow corner. Why is she batting so low in the order?!

Right then. Bangladesh right up against it now, but at least they have Mostary anchoring their innings.

Ecclestone is another who has bowled very well tonight. Mostary is happy to take a single first ball, but Nahida gets off the strike and also grabs a single. And based on how Nahida swung at her dot ball, Mostary is quick to have a word and might be less keen to give her partner the strike.

And that is why. Nahida just spoons one up to Dean and that is an easy catch.

Mostary hammers one down the ground. Finally. Capsey has been so tight, but that was a loose ball.

Beaumont is then handed half a chance at square leg, but the ball drops fractions short.

Another single, and that is five from the over.

Bangladesh in real trouble here. Running out of wickets and they do not appear to have nearly enough runs on the board.

Capsey finally leaks some singles, three to be precise. So, Bangladesh have the scoreboard ticking over, but singles are not cutting the custard here today.

There was one messy half chance in that, a small edge nearly going onto the stumps with Jones too far back to try for the catch.

Fahima Khatun is the new batter. And she gets off the mark immediately.

A big rebuild for Bangladesh now. Not enough runs and five wickets down.

Dean comes back into the attack. And she makes the breakthrough!

The pressure has been building, and Ritu finally swings at one and gets caught in the deep by Smith. This might be a blessing in disguise for Bangladesh here...

She gives up a couple of singles.

Capsey remains in the attack.

A single and a two run, which is better but not really enough for Bangladesh here. What would be competitive? They have some wickets in hand, so must want 200. Could they get to 220?

Finally, a boundary! The first for over 60 balls would you believe.

Sciver-Brunt again, the batters liking a bit of pace coming on to the bat.

And another! This is turning into an expensive over. The 100 comes up for Bangladesh, 11 from the over. Mostary finally remembering she's there to sore, not block.

Capsey has a half chance there of a caught and bowled. But it drops just short, despite a valiant dive from the bowler.

Ritu skews the next one, and that should be a single as it landed safe but Mostary was ball watching.

The running between the wickets there was not good enough. Another maiden.

Ritu finally gets off the mark, as Sciver-Brunt's over goes for two singles.

The cameras again cut to the Bangladesh dug out, and the smiles are... Well, grimaces is more like it.

They know ENgland have them pinned down here.

Capsey comes into the attack for England. And her opening over is another tight, tidy one with just a single from the final ball as Mostary hangs on to the strile.

Bangaledesh need to start scoring here, or they won't have much of a total to defend.

Sciver-Brunt brings herself back into the attack. She was expensive earlier, but the game has changed since then.

A single off the first ball, and five dots to follow. So the maidens stop, but the run rate is hardly motoring for Bangladesh.

Smith complete with zinc block over her cheeks is full of smiles after bowling a maiden.

Bangladesh are unable to get away here, and the overs are ticking by.

And the captain is standing with her arms crossed, looking on. She can do nothing really from the sidelines, she's already been and gone from the crease...

Dean is still in the attack.

And it is a maiden from her. England are tightening the screw here.

Smith gives up just the one run from a tight over.

Ritu is yet to get off the mark after facing five balls, so England know who to target here.

Dean finishes her over, leaking a leg bye and a single.

But all in all it was a good over. England are not allowing Bangladesh to escape here, they keep pegging them back and that strike rate is under complete control.

England won the only other time these two played, back in the 2022 World Cup.

They will be playing again though, with a tour planned between the two sides in 2027.

Two singles off a tidy over from Smith, who is back in the attack.

There are plenty of school kids in for this one and enjoying themselves, as England debate how to get the breakthrough.

Shorna sweeps to the boundary off Dean, who also gives up a single to Mostary. That is more like it from Shorna, who has watched and carefully played herself in here.

Seven from the over, and this one is still carefully poised for either wickets or fireworks - or both.

Ecclestone coughs up a single off the second ball, but that is it.

One off it, with Mostary looking settled now and Shorna having faced 13 balls so far.

Dean is bowling. She leaks a two and a single, before the umpires call her fourth ball a wide.

Plenty of smiles in the England team as the strike rotates again on the final ball. No sign of any tension out there, as this game continues to rattle forward.

England won't be too concerned just yet, with the strike rate hovering at 3.95 at the moment.

Ecclestone remains in the attack, with Beaumont still at silly point.

Mostary manages to run a single off the fifth ball, which is then called a wide. And another wide follows.

Beautmont is throwing herself around at silly point but everything is going slightly to her right or left, and she is cutting a frustrated figure out there at the moment.

Mostary edges one, but with no slip she breathes a sigh of relief as the ball runs away for four.

Three singles too off Dean, and the scireline ticks on.

A wicket over for Ecclestone then via one drinks break, and England have some momentum again.

There is a short mandatory concussion check for Supta, who gets a ball to the helmet. As such, the players take a drinks break.

But as soon as play resumes, Ecclestone gets her woman!

Supta feathers the lightest of edges to the keeper, and goes.

Dean remains in the attack for England.

Two singles and a wide keep the strike rotating for Bangladesh, who score three from the over.

Both sides need some impetus here - England need a wicket, Bangladesh could do with a few boundaries to heap the pressure on their opponents.

Ecclestone again, and the third ball just trickles away for a boundary as Supta continues to take advantage of anything loose.

There is some confusion between the wickets, Supta getting halfway down before being sent back! But fortunately, the ball had trickled into a gap in the field, and Supta makes it back to the strikers' end with no real worries.

The strike rate is 4.00 at the moment.

There is a change in the bowling, Dean replacing the captain who has been expensive.

The third ball is a wide, but the rest of the over is relatively tidy.

Just the one extra from it.

Beaumont is in at silly point here under the helmet to Ecclestone, but she cannot prevent an early single.

The fourth ball goes for four as Mostray continues to see the ball well, and Bangladesh's 50 comes up.

Sciver-Brunt bowls a loose one to start, and Supta has no issues finding the boundary. A single from the next ball puts the pressure firmly on the English captain. A wide and another boundary as Sciver-Brunt goes short, only for Mostary to pull into the air for four. Oh dear and a swinging shot through the covers for another four.

A big over for Bangladesh, 14 from it.

Bangladesh 31-2 (10 overs) - Mostary 6, Supta 19

It is a double change, Ecclestone coming into the attack now, so more spin.

Dark glasses on, Ecclestone already finds some turn around the outside of off.

A maiden to open up for the experienced spinner.

Sciver-Brunt takes over. She leaks one boundary, Mostary taking advantage as she strays a bit full. Add in a single and the scoreline moves on for Bangladesh.

Mostary gets off the mark after digging out a fuller ball, before Supta misses one that spins away.

Another good over, just the one run from it and England remain in control in the early stages here.

Three dot balls to open up the over, and Bell continues in that trend for her first maiden.

The pressure is firmly on Bangladesh right now.

Bell will be relieved after that expensive over to pick up the first wicket. Joty is at the crease now for Bangladesh.

Sciver-Brunt is sticking with Bell here, even though she was expensive last time around. A single from the second ball rotates the strike, before a couple of dot balls. This is tighter from Bell.

And a wicket! Haider skies one straight down the ground but lacks the power to make it anywhere near the boundary. Dunkley takes the catch with ease.

Bangladesh 23-0 (4 overs) - Haider 4, Supta 17

A couple of singles to start Smith's second over, as the cameras pan to the Bangladesh dug out - with smiles aplenty down there thanks to this bright start.

It is a quick over with the ball not needing to be retrieved from the boundary, and the flow of runs has been stopped for now.

Bangladesh 21-0 (3 overs) - Haider 3, Supta 16

Bell opens her second over with a wide, that Jones has to dive for down the legside.

Then comes a half-hearted appeal from the second ball, that looks a long shot as the batters scamper a single.

The third ball is a beautiful shot from Supta, driven for four. The runs are starting to leak here. And yes, here is another boundary - Supta clipping off down to fine leg.

Oh dear, another boundary - this is expensive. Supta is happy to swing the bat at that one, knowing there is no one down at gully. A swing and a miss from the final ball, and 14 runs leaked in that over from England.

Bangladesh 7-0 (2 overs) - Haider 2, Supta 4

Haider once again opens with a quickly run single off Smith, who has been given bowling duties from the other end - so we have some immediate spin out there. That puts Supta back on strike, and there is some more quick running between the wickets with half a chance of a run out, if the throw to the stumps had been more accurate.

One wide from the over too.

Haider opens with a single. That leaves Supta to face, and she edges the fifth ball towards the slips! It doesn't quite carry to Knight in the slips though, bouncing fractions short, and runs away for four.

The two sides come out for the anthems

It is a hot day in Guwahati, as the two teams come out for the anthems. The England players and support staff belt out the anthem, as they look to continue that momentum from their South Africa victory.

Not long to go then until Bangladesh send their openers out to face the England attack.

In their opening match, England demolished South Africa - bowling them out for 69 and cantering to the win in 14 overs. As such, they are largely untested going into this one, whilst Bangladesh beat Pakistan by seven wickets in their first match.

This is a relatively simple format, the top four from the group stage progressing to the semi-finals.
