'Nightmare' - Primoz Roglic crashes and punctures in gravel drama at Giro d'Italia, Tom Pidcock also involved

There was gravel mayhem at the Giro d’Italia on Stage 9, with Primoz Roglic and Tom Pidcock among those floored in a mass crash at the front of the race. Roglic's general classification hopes took a big hit after a nightmare sequence of events – including a post-crash puncture and a long chase back on Tuscany's iconic white roads. Pidcock was the favourite to win Sunday's stage to Siena.

Primoz Roglic endured a nightmare on the gravel as his Giro d’Italia ambitions took a heavy blow on Stage 9.
The race burst into life on the white roads of Tuscany, with chaos erupting on the gravel sectors during Sunday’s run to Siena.
A mass crash was triggered when Lucas Hamilton (Ineos Grenadiers) lost control in a corner with 51km remaining, taking down a host of riders - including Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and pre-stage favourite Tom Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling), both of whom hit the deck.
Despite their inadvertent role in the crash, Ineos sensed an opportunity. With their man Egan Bernal avoiding the pile-up, the team pushed on. Bernal broke clear in a select group alongside Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) and others, as splits formed across the field.
Further back, Roglic’s day went from bad to worse.
"No, no, no!" cried Rob Hatch on commentary as Roglic was spotted with a puncture with 46km to go.
"How much bad luck can you get? Roglic is rocking - and not in a good way. Roglic and his GC tilt is leaning even before we get to the Tower of Pisa. It's a nightmare on the gravel for Rog."
With no team car nearby, Roglic was left riding on with a flat, haemorrhaging time as his GC rivals vanished up the road. He eventually got a bike change, but by then, the damage was severe.
