Troy Parrott's latest hat-trick has led to Ajax refunding their fans following their heaviest loss in the Dutch Cup since 1927. Republic of Ireland star Parrott, who netted a hat-trick against Hungary in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, scored another three as AZ Alkmaar dumped the Eredivisie giants out of the competition. Ajax have made the call to refund their fans following a humiliating 6-0 defeat to AZ Alkmaar, which saw Troy Parrott notch a hat-trick.

The loss came in the Dutch Cup, where Republic of Ireland star Parrott - who scored a famous hat-trick for his national team against Hungary last year to claim a FIFA World Cup play-off spot - helped his side deal Ajax one of the heaviest losses in their history.

Peer Koopmeiners, Kees Smit and Ibrahim Sadiq were also on target for Alkmaar against 10-man Ajax, who had Owen Wijndal sent off in the 66th minute.

Following the game, Ajax manager Fred Grim said: "We are ashamed of this result."

"[The club] believe we should cover the costs for the away fans. And we will do so."

Ajax are record 20-time winners of the Dutch Cup and were on an eight-game unbeaten run.

The 6-0 thrashing is their joint-worst result this century and their heaviest loss in the Dutch Cup since 1927.

Midfielder Youri Regeer added: "It wasn't Ajax-worthy today.

"As a club and as a group of players, we have to compensate for the tickets. That's the only thing we can do."

In the opposite camp, Parrott was delighted with his trio of strikes after a difficult spell in front of goal, especially as Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson was in attendance.

"It's very special," he said. "A hat-trick is the best feeling you can have as a striker."

The 23-year-old former Tottenham Hotspur striker - who also had spells at Millwall, Ipswich Town, MK Dons and Preston North End before moving to Excelsior in the Netherlands - took only two minutes to open the scoring.

He scored the second goal on 33 minutes in what he called a "beautiful" effort, latching onto a long ball from goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro to produce a smart finish.

After his team moved four goals clear, he added a fifth with 10 minutes to play.

"I needed that goal," Troy said about his opener. "Those are the best goals, when you're in the right position. I scored against Fortuna, but I haven't scored much in the previous matches.

"I didn't score against Volendam on Saturday either. I always want to score, so it's nice to get an easy goal."

Since making a permanent switch to Alkmaar from Spurs in July 2024, in a deal worth a reported £6.7 million, Parrott has scored 39 goals in 71 games.

For Ireland, he has struck 10 times in 33 matches, including his outstanding hat-trick against Hungary in the World Cup qualifiers.

During his time at Spurs, he made his Premier League debut in a 5-0 win over Burnley under Jose Mourinho, but played only four times for the north London club, despite coming through the youth system and spending five years in the senior set-up.
