Barcelona are aiming to make their ninth UEFA Champions League/European Cup final when they face Inter Milan in the second leg of their semi-final at San Siro on Tuesday.

The tie is level 3-3 after a thrilling first leg that saw a Lamine Yamal-inspired Barca fight back from 2-0 down.

The winners will face either Arsenal or Paris Saint-Germain in the final, with the Ligue 1 side leading the tie 1-0 going into the second leg on Wednesday, May 7, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Ahead of the second legs of the semi-finals, we look at Barcelona’s history in Champions League/European Cup finals…

Eight finals, five wins

Barcelona lost their first two European Cup finals before lifting the trophy for the first time in 1991/92 when they beat Sampdoria at Wembley.

A crushing defeat to AC Milan in the 1993/94 final followed, and Barca would have to wait another 12 years to win their second title.

Then came a golden era for Barcelona with Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta and co. leading them to three victories in seven years.

Barca have not been back to the final since their last triumph, coming closest in 2018/19 when they were stunned 4-3 on aggregate by Liverpool after winning the first leg 3-0.

First European Cup glory

After rivals Real Madrid dominated the early years of the European Cup, winning the first five editions, Barcelona made their first final in 1960/61.

However, they were beaten 3-2 by Bela Guttman’s Benfica, who would go on to win the title the following year with Eusebio and also make the final in 1962/63.

Barca returned to the final in 1985/86 but lost on penalties to Steaua Bucharest after seeing all four spot-kicks saved by goalkeeper Helmut Duckadam.

Barca won the European Cup for the first time in 1991/92 as Ronald Koeman’s extra-time free-kick gave them a 1-0 victory over Sampdoria at Wembley.

That was the final season of the European Cup before it was rebranded as the Champions League.

1993/94: Beaten by Milan

Barca did not defend their title in 1992/93, failing to even make the group stage as they were eliminated in the second round by CSKA Moscow.

In 1993/94, they were back in the final and boasted two of the top scorers in the tournament in Koeman and Hristo Stoichkov.

But Barca were swept aside 4-0 by Fabio Capello’s AC Milan, who scored all their goals before the hour mark.

"When the third went in, we knew it was over," said Barcelona goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta. "That was the worst night of my career."

2005/06: Comeback win over Arsenal

Barcelona’s route to the 2005/06 final included a 3-2 aggregate triumph over Chelsea in the last 16 and a tight semi-final win over AC Milan.

In the final, they were given a huge early advantage as Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was sent off for fouling Samuel Eto'o just outside the area, even though the loose ball fell to Ludovic Giuly and he tapped into an empty net.

The Gunners took the lead despite their numerical disadvantage when Sol Campbell headed in towards the end of the first half.

But the introduction of Henrik Larsson helped Barca turn the final around as he first laid off for Eto’o to equalise in the 76th minute and then teed up Juliano Belletti to score the winner four minutes later.

2008/09: Barca overcome Man Utd

The final against Arsenal would be the start of several high-stakes Champions League clashes against Premier League teams for Barcelona.

The following year, they lost to Liverpool in the last 16, before being dumped out by Manchester United in the semi-finals in 2007/08.

In 2008/09, they beat Guus Hiddink’s Chelsea in a dramatic semi-final to set up a meeting with Man Utd in the final.

In a match that saw Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo face off, it was Messi who came out on top, scoring the second in a 2-0 win for Barca.

"On a night like this you need to be able to play your best football and we didn't produce it," said Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand.

"You have to give credit to Barcelona. They played well. I don't think any one of us can say we played well as individuals or collectively."

2010/11: Messi inspires another win

Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona lost in the semis to Inter in 2009/10 but returned to the final a year later - again facing Manchester United.

The match was held at Wembley, but United could not make that count in their favour as Barca dominated.

Pedro scored the opening goal in the 27th minute and although Wayne Rooney soon levelled, Barca pulled clear in the second half with goals from Messi and David Villa.

It was one of the great displays in a Champions League final and one which even United manager Sir Alex Ferguson couldn’t help but appreciate.

"Nobody's given us a hiding like that, but they deserve it," Ferguson said. "They play the right way and they enjoy their football.

"They do mesmerise you with their passing, and we never really did control Messi. But many people have said that. In my time as manager, it's the best team I've faced."

2014/15: Luis Enrique’s men beat Juve

Barca missed out on more Champions League glory in Guardiola’s final season at the club as they were beaten by Chelsea in the semis in 2011/12.

They fell at the same stage the next season, this time against Bayern Munich, before losing to Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals in 2013/14.

But in 2014/15, they were back on top with Luis Enrique as head coach and the formidable attacking trio of Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez dazzling in their first season together.

In the Champions League final against Juventus, they took the lead after just four minutes through Ivan Rakitic, only to be pegged back by Alvaro Morata’s strike after half-time.

Barcelona responded with goals from Suarez and Neymar to seal their fifth title.
