Arne Slot says Galatasaray will challenge Liverpool with an atmosphere "different from any other away game" when the two sides meet in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League last 16 clash.

The Reds players head to Istanbul knowing what awaits, having suffered a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray during the league phase in September in front of a hostile crowd.

Slot is prepared for another "challenging environment" for his players when the two sides lock horns again for a place in the quarter-finals, with the first leg live on TNT Sports 1 and discovery+ on Tuesday, March 10 at 17:45 UK time.

Speaking to Owen Hargreaves for The Breakdown on TNT Sports, Slot was asked how he views the tie.

"Difficult. That is what you expect in the last 16, because every team you are going to face is difficult because they are there for a reason," Slot said.

"What makes it even more [difficult] for us is to know that we have already played there and we have lost. It’s a very good team and they have very good players.

"But the whole atmosphere makes it different from any other away game I’ve ever played. Every time we had the ball, the noise, the whistling, is so hard that sometimes you wonder if this could be done by human people.

"It’s so hard, from the start to the end. The noise is even harder than when they score a goal. So, it’s a challenging environment to play, but the good thing is that we play at home as well, and that’s going to be a challenging environment for Galatasaray to play in."

Arsenal and Man City 'better than us this season'

Liverpool’s European campaign could still bring some joy to a season that has been a disappointment on the domestic front.

The reigning Premier League champions failed to mount a credible defence this term and sit sixth in the standings, 19 points adrift of leaders Arsenal, although they have reached the quarter-finals of the Emirates FA Cup.

Slot surprised and delighted the Merseyside faithful in equal measure when he led the club to the title in his debut season directly after succeeding long-time manager Jurgen Klopp.

But he explained how "multiple factors" have resulted in his side "not being able to compete to win it again."

"It’s clear that going back-to-back is difficult, let alone in the Premier League, let alone in the current Premier League, where competitors can do similar things or even more than we can do," Slot said.

"We always knew this would be very difficult because we lost a lot of players and we brought players in that took some time to be up to speed. We always knew the signings we made would be a big success at this club, but we also knew it might take them some time to adapt and that I think has been shown.

"Not by the performances but playing every three days. That intensity is something new for a few of them. Add to that the injuries we had, some players missing out of pre-season, the ones that won the league last season. That has meant, with multiple other factors, that we were not able to compete to win it again.

"And give credit to other teams as well. The way Arsenal has done in the summer period by signing so many good players and then still playing the football they do, as they did last season already, they improved even more.

"[Manchester] City as always are on top over there. They have been better than us this season, that is completely clear."

The remaining objective in the league for Liverpool is clear – securing a place in the Champions League for next season.

It is almost certain that a top five finish will be enough to seal a spot, with England sitting way out in front in UEFA’s ‘European Performance Spots’ table with a score of 22.291, ahead of Germany (17.571), Spain (17.406) and Italy (17.357). The top two ranked leagues earn an extra qualification spot for 2026/27.

Being there is vital not only because the players want to be but because of the riches that Europe’s premier competition brings, Slot explained.

"It’s very important for us as a team because we want to be in the Champions League," Slot said.

"And it has shown how important it is for this club financially. We know we are in a transition at the moment with this team. We always knew it was going to happen after Jurgen left, it was also something they said to me when the first conversations were there.

"We’re still in that transition and a transition works better if there is money available. So we know how important it is to qualify for the players, just to play Champions League football, but definitely also financially for the club."
