Real Madrid's UEFA Champions League clash against Olympiacos had the early makings of a big upset, as Chiquinho netted an eighth-minute opener to put the Greek side ahead. However, their slender advantage was swiftly dismantled by the free-scoring Kylian Mbappe, who made Champions League history with a blistering first-half hat-trick to single-handedly guide Xabi Alonso's side to victory.

Kylian Mbappe made UEFA Champions League history as he netted four goals - including a remarkable first-half hat-trick - in his side's thrilling 4-3 win over Olympiacos on Wednesday.

Real Madrid were rocked on eight minutes as Chiquinho fired the hosts into a shock lead in Piraeus, threatening a big upset for Xabi Alonso's side who, before the European tie, had won just once in November.

However, it took just under seven minutes for Mbappe to turn the tide of the match, as he scored the second-fastest Champions League hat-trick of all time to launch his side into a 3-1 lead.

The onslaught began on 22 minutes, when Vinicius Junior's inch-perfect, incisive ball deep from the left, with the outside of his boot, floated perfectly into Mbappe's path, for the French striker to calmly stroke the ball beyond Konstantinos Tzolakis.

Two minutes later, Mbappe headed Madrid in front, perfectly placed to dispatch Arda Guler's cross, with the Liga leaders applying immense pressure, constantly recycling attacks and utilising the flanks.

Mbappe sealed his hat-trick on 29 minutes when he took down Eduardo Camavinga's looping ball over the top of the Olympiacos defence to once again slot a cool finish beyond Tzolakis.

Olympiacos forward Mehdi Taremi caused something of a scare when he cut his side's deficit to one in the second half, but Mbappe notched his fourth of the match - and ninth Champions League goal of the season - which was ultimately crucial, as Ayoub El Kaabi netted a third for the hosts nine minutes from time.

The France international's hat-trick (six minutes, 42 seconds) was the fastest ever recorded in the Champions League by a starting player in a match.

The only player to have notched a quicker treble in the history of the competition was Mohamed Salah (six minutes, 12 seconds) during Liverpool's 7-1 win against Rangers in October 2022. Salah was a substitute in that victory.

Speaking on TNT Sports Goals Show Xtra, Rory Smith explained why Mbappe's four-goal haul is a timely reminder of his quality, when teenage stars such as Chelsea's Estevao and Barcelona's Lamine Yamal have been occupying the headlines.

"The conversation has moved on, Estevao, Lamine Yamal; Mbappe is kind of making a point he doesn’t want to be forgotten," Smith said.

In a remarkable start to the season, Mbappe's quartet on Wednesday took his season goal tally to 22 from 18 matches. It was the fifth Champions League hat-trick of his career.

His side sit fifth in the league phase standings with four wins from their opening five matches, while they are just a point ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
