L’Equipe hand out SIX 3s in player ratings as debate rages after UEFA Champions League classic - but which Bayern Munich player got a 9?

Was the nine-goal, first-leg showdown a demonstration of incredible attacking prowess or defensive fallibility?

The tie has opened up a wider philosophical debate. Are you half-full or half-empty? Risk or risk-free? Guardiola or Mourinho?

The feeling at the Parc des Princes afterwards felt more a celebration of attacking flair but leading French outlet L'Equipe took a dim view of how the two sides' defenders had performed.

So much so that SIX players were given a rating of just three: Josep Stanisic, Alphonso Davies and Manuel Neuer from Bayern, and Nuno Mendes, Pacho and Marquinhos for Paris Saint-Germain.

Two of those - Marquinhos and Mendes - were felt to have had "nightmare" evenings against Bayern's brilliant wingers, Michael Olise and Luis Diaz.

That said, for a publication that is notoriously stingy with its praise, there were also generous ratings for two of the game's leading lights: Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Luis Diaz both earned the rare privilege of a 9.

But two-goal Ousmane Dembele was only awarded an 8, despite a display that leaves him well-placed once again for another tilt at the Ballon d'Or.

"Total football" was how L'Equipe led their front page, before waxing lyrical about an encounter that will go down in history.

"Such was this game that it might be best we never come back," they wrote, "instead remaining high on these emotions, shouting about the masterpiece we saw, at least for those that have a voice left, and hang this unprecedented match in the Louvre.

"This match showed the best of modern football and we can't pretend that it was better before, as we've rarely seen something as good as this, so magnificent and dizzying."

France 1998 World Cup winner Bixente Lizarazu said the first-half was like a "boxing match" and felt PSG are in the ascendancy with Bayern needing to take the "initiative" next week in Munich.

The question now is will either side change their ways next week in a bid to tighten up?

Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany made it clear he is all in.

"I think someone said to me yesterday [Monday] in the press conference that Luis Enrique thought that maybe the game [the first leg] would be different, and that one of the teams might hold a bit back," he said in his post-match press conference.

"And I told you I didn't believe it. There was a part of the game that was predictable too. You've got to accept the consequences and the risks, but also what those can bring.

"Either you change everything, or you go further into what you do. There's no middle ground for this type of match. You already know the answer for next week."

Luis Enrique, for his part, wasn't backing down either.

"I asked my staff how many goals we think we’ll have to score [in the second leg], and we agreed on three," the PSG head coach said.

"It’s a stadium that brings us so many happy memories; we won our first Champions League there. Bayern will be there with their supporters – we’ll show the same mentality. We’ll be going to win the match."
