Euro 2024: Ryan Porteous to miss Scotland’s remaining group matches after red card ban upgraded to two games

Ryan Porteous will miss Scotland's two remaining Euro 2024 group stage matches after his red card suspension was upgraded.

Porteous was sent off for a reckless challenge on Ilkay Gundogan during Scotland’s 5-1 loss to Germany in the opening Group A match.

UEFA’s control, ethics and disciplinary body have since reviewed the incident and added an extra match to Porteous’ initial one-match suspension for "serious rough play".

The Watford defender will now miss fixtures against Switzerland on Wednesday and Hungary on Sunday as Scotland aim to progress from the group stage of an international tournament for the first time in history.

Porteous received his red card as the first half against Germany was coming to an end, with Scotland already 2-0 down after early goals from Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala.

The Euro 2024 hosts were awarded a penalty for the challenge on Gundogan after a VAR review, which Kai Havertz scored.

Niclas Fullkrug and Emre Can then added to Germany’s tally in the second half, while a late own goal from Antonio Rudiger was of little consolation for Scotland.

Manager Steve Clark later revealed Porteous was feeling "very down" since the incident.

"The other night, he was trying to stop a clear goal-scoring opportunity and he definitely went in too hard and we are pleased that Gundogan appears to have no lasting damage," he said.

"It is something that Ryan will learn, but is an honest challenge to try to get the ball.

"[It was] to try to stop a goal-scoring opportunity so I wouldn’t be too hard on him. He was one of my cuddles. I explained the situation. It doesn’t look good. Ryan didn’t want to make that challenge, he wanted to stop a goal.

"He is very down as you would expect, but we will pick him up, don’t worry about that."

Meanwhile, captain Andy Robertson admitted Scotland “got it all wrong” against Germany, but said his team responded well to Porteous’s red card.

"First half we got it all wrong really," he said. "We didn't really show up and their game-plan worked a million times better than ours did.

"Second half down to 10, I thought we dug in really well. We're well-backed here, we've got so many supporters and yet today was hugely disappointing.

"We have to bounce back quickly because there were a lot of things that were wrong and we have to sort it before Wednesday (against Switzerland)."
