Euro 2024 final: Harry Kane would ‘swap everything’ in career for European glory - ‘Time to get over the line’

Harry Kane says it is "time to get over the line" and lead England to their first major triumph since 1966 when they take on Spain in the final of Euro 2024, their second successive European final. Harry Kane said he would “swap everything” he has achieved in his career to captain England to European Championship glory in Berlin on Sunday.

Gareth Southgate’s side will take on Spain on Sunday in their second successive Euro final, following their defeat to Italy at Wembley Stadium in 2021.

Kane is England’s all-time leading goalscorer with 66 goals in 97 appearances - including a World Cup Golden Boot - while he also leads the Tottenham Hotspur goal charts with 280.

He is second to only Alan Shearer in the Premier League all-time goal rankings with 213 and racked up three Golden Boot awards during his time in the English top flight.

The 30-year-old joined Bayern Munich at the beginning of the 2023/24 season and netted an emphatic 44 times in his debut season.

But despite all his goalscoring and personal accolades, Kane has yet to win a trophy at club or international level.

“It's no secret that I haven't won a team trophy,” Kane said in Saturday’s press conference. “Every year that goes by, you are more determined and motivated to change that.

“Tomorrow night I have the opportunity to win one of the biggest you can ever win and make history with my nation.

“I am extremely proud to be English so, no question, I'd swap everything I've done in my career to have a special night and a win tomorrow evening, but that's not the case.

“A lot of hard work from now and until that moment. I'm ready to go and to make tomorrow night a special one."

Kane: 'There's an extra hunger and fire in the belly'

Kane admitted that it has been difficult for the squad to move on from their Wembley heartbreak, but it is “time to get over the line” in the final of Euro 2024.

“It shows unbelievable consistency,” Kane said on England reaching back-to-back finals.

“A lot of us after that final were obviously heartbroken with the result, as always it’s a long journey back to getting where we are now. Full credit to the boys for the resilience that we've shown.

“It speaks volumes for the mentality of the squad, [we’re] extremely happy to be in this situation and to be back in a European final. Of course, we are really desperate to go one step further than we did last time.

“There's an extra hunger and fire in the belly to make sure this one goes our way, but we also know it's going to be an extremely tough night. Whenever you lose a final, it's tough to wipe it from the memory.

“We've done fantastic in a lot of tournaments but now it's time to get over the line and we have that opportunity tomorrow.”

Southgate: 'I am a believer in dreams'

England boss Gareth Southgate joined Kane for media duties at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and said that he is “not a believer in fairytales, but I am a believer in dreams” ahead of The Three Lions’ second crack at European glory.

Southgate has guided the England team to two major tournament finals, and feels his side have what it takes to get over the line.

“We've had big dreams, but you have to make those things happen," Southgate said. "Fate, the run that we've had, the late goals, the penalties - it doesn't equate to it being our moment.

“We have to make it happen tomorrow and perform at the level we need to perform. Of course, it would be a lovely story and it's in our hands but the performance is the most important thing."

The England manager added that he would “love to give everyone a special night” as the national team fight for their first major honour since 1966.

"When you're trying to create dreams, you've got to have a clear picture of what you want to see at the end of it,” Southgate said.

"That lights a small fire for some people but we know what it would mean to everybody at home, we know what it would mean to us as a squad, the hard work that has gone in.

"It’s been a huge team effort and all of those people have helped create the culture we have and we would love to give everyone a special night again tomorrow."
