Lewis Hamilton has said that he is “really, really proud” of England at Euro 2024, despite the pressure that the young squad has come under.

The Three Lions are preparing for their quarter-final encounter with in-form Switzerland in Düsseldorf on Saturday, after Jude Bellingham’s wonder-strike in injury time prevented a shock exit in the last 16 to Slovakia.

Harry Kane’s header in the first minute of extra time proved to be the winner as Gareth Southgate’s side just about reached the last eight.

England have disappointed in Germany so far, scoring just four goals in their four games, but they do remain undefeated.

Now, Hamilton, speaking to CNN ahead of the British Grand Prix, has compared the pressures felt by the England players to those that he faced when he was a young British prodigy on the grid.

“I remember being young and thrown into the spotlight,” he said.

“I can’t imagine [what] it is like for those guys that are on the pitch. The pressure from the whole country is weighing on you. It is tough.

“I’m really, really proud of our team with all the difficulties that they’ve experienced, and they’ve faced time and time again, just continuing to get up and have the resilience. I think it’s just been really impressive.”

Hamilton, who is making a surprise move from Mercedes to Ferrari at the end of the current Formula One season, was keen not to overplay his expectations of the side, emphasising that they needed to remain united and focussed.

“I try not to get too amped up!” he said. “You know how England always is with the World Cup. I don’t want to apply too much pressure.

“We’ve just got such a talented pool of players. We just need them to be in synergy.”

There is good news going into England's quarter-final tie, with Jude Bellingham, who was under UEFA investigation for his goal celebration after his strike against Slovakia, available for selection after being handed a suspended one-match suspension and a fine.

Luke Shaw has also been billed as fit enough to feature, which will give Southgate a natural left-back option to choose for the first time this tournament.

Should England get past Switzerland this weekend, they will face the winners of the Netherlands and Turkey in the second semi-final next week, which would take place in Dortmund on Wednesday.
