Mbappe is in something of a crisis at Real Madrid, after a period where the French forward made some decisions that have left him at odds with the fans.Â
And those fans made their feelings clear in the 69th minute against Real Oviedo, when Mbappe came onto the field to replace Gonzalo Garcia.
Mbappe seemed unperturbed by the whistles echoing around the Bernabeu, smiling as the cameras stayed with the 27-year-old to see if he would react to the less-than-warm welcome.
But he soon answered the crowd in the right way, assisting with Real’s second goal as Jude Bellingham put them 2-0 up in the 80th minute to add to Garcia's opener.Â
When Mbappe joined Real Madrid at the start of the 2024/25 season on a five-year deal, he was immediately popular with the fans - but that popularity has faded this year after a series of incidents.Â
A persistent knee injury was looked at by Paris specialists rather than Real Madrid’s own team in late February and early March, and then a torn muscle took the French star out of some key matches as Real fell behind arch rivals Barcelona in the fight for La Liga.Â
But while recuperating from his injury, Mbappe was pictured on holiday with his girlfriend rather than resting.
That began to turn the tide with the fans, but then came reports of a spat with a coach in training, a social media post, and the fact he pulled out of El Clasico with muscle soreness.Â
To top it off, there has been an online petition circulated, demanding Mbappe exit the club.Â

But while the fans were keen to direct their ire at Mbappe, earlier in the season they were every bit as vocal towards Vinicius Junior.
At the time, Mbappe leapt to the defence of his team-mate - telling the fans to ”boo the whole squad, not just a few players.”
But in recent weeks it is Mbappe who has been the focus of fans' ire, with the crowd on Thursday night also booing him as he warmed up prior to coming on.
Real have two games remaining in the season, away at Sevilla and at home to Athletic Club, and will finish second behind Barcelona.
Following the game with Athletic, Mbappe can shift his focus to the World Cup. He was named in the France squad by coach Didier Deschamps shortly before Real faced Oviedo.
