The 23-year-old missed the club's victory over Huddersfield on Boxing Day after returning to Paris to be with his partner Melanie and young son.
But according to the Mail he missed his flight back and so was not on time for training or the squad meal that followed at the Lowry Hotel, despite the session being pushed back to 6pm after Solskjaer wanted to give the players more time with their families.
The Norwegian, who has won his first two games in charge convincingly, then showed his tough side by rebuking the winger for his behaviour.
Solskjaer later blamed Martial’s absence from the Huddersfield match on ‘illness’.
The interim boss, who is on loan from Molde, has also admitted he would take the manager’s job on a permanent basis if it were offered to him.
The 45-year-old told Sky Sports: "My job is for the next five months, because I'm going to leave them to someone else when they come in.
"You're always ambitious of course, but as I've told Ed [Woodward, United chief executive] and the owners, I'm here to do as well as I can and, if in May you decide someone else will be coming in, then fantastic, and if you decide it's me, I'm sure we will agree."
