Harry Maguire 'positive' on Manchester United contract talks, expects 'big future' for derby star Amad Diallo

Manchester United central defender Harry Maguire is "really positive" over contract talks at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting his deal could be extended by two years. The England centre-back also praised Amad Diallo as a player with a "big future" after the winger was at the heart of their 2-1 win over arch-rivals Manchester City on Sunday afternoon in the Premier League.

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire revealed he is "really positive" over talks that would see him extend his contract at Old Trafford.

The 31-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season, though United have an option to extend that by a further 12 months.

Maguire lost the captaincy under Erik ten Hag to Bruno Fernandes, and he looked set to leave in the summer of 2023, before turning down a move to West Ham.

He won back his place despite the arrival of Lisandro Martinez and his own injury struggles, having played just 22 last season and not playing more than 40 games in any of the last three full campaigns.

Injuries struck again this year, but he featured for new manager Ruben Amorim in the 2-1 win at Manchester City on Sunday, and was one of the team’s brightest performers.

Speaking to the press after the victory, he said: "All the signs are positive at the moment and the chat that I’m having is really positive.

"I’ve still got this year to go with an option in their hands."

He added: "It’s been a difficult start to the season for us and not much for our fans to cheer about, so today’s for them.

"I’m sure they’ll be celebrating. I was injured when he [Amorim] first joined, so they’re looking after my minutes – I haven’t been able to play back-to-back games yet. Hopefully, with 90 minutes under my belt for the first time in two, three months [I can play consecutive matches]."

Amorim’s arrival has seen United switch to a 3-4-3 system, and Maguire has played in a back three over the course of his career, particularly with England under Gareth Southgate.

"I’ve played in it numerous times in my career – generally on the left but obviously playing in the middle at the moment," Maguire said.

"It feels good, we feel solid. There’s still much more improvement we need to do."

United’s win over City means that they remain in touch with a top-four finish after only Liverpool and Chelsea have shown signs of a long-term title challenge.

They had Amad Diallo’s fine late efforts to thank for their win, and he praised the 22-year-old for his impressive recent form.

Maguire said: "He’s done really well this season. He’s only still a young boy and has a lot to learn.

"I’m sure he’ll get loads of experience playing in these big matches, and I’m sure he’s got a big future for this club."
