Bournemouth appoint ex-Borussia Dortmund boss Marco Rose as new head coach to replace Andoni Iraola

Bournemouth have appointed Marco Rose as their new head coach on a three-year contract, with the German set to replace Andoni Iraola, who will leave the club at the end of the season.

Rose, who has been without a club since parting ways with RB Leipzig in March 2025, has had spells in charge of Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga.
The 49-year-old German was a top target for Bournemouth as part of their succession plans for Iraola's exit, with Ipswich Town's Kieran McKenna and Rayo Vallecano's Inigo Perez also believed to be on the shortlist.
Rose, who was also reportedly on Tottenham Hotspur's shortlist following the dismissal of Thomas Frank in February, has never previously coached in England.
Known for his high-intensity, pressing style, Rose is widely viewed as a natural successor to Iraola.
Rose made his name at Red Bull Salzburg, where he won back-to-back league titles in 2017/18 and 2018/19, and reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
From there, he joined Gladbach and led the club to a Champions League place in his first term, taking them to the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition the following season.
He was appointed Borussia Dortmund manager but was sacked after one season in charge despite a second-place finish behind Bayern Munich and winning 27 of his 47 games in charge.
Rose spent two-and-a-half years at RB Leipzig, during which time he won the DFB-Pokal in the 2022-23 season, defeating Oliver Glasner’s Eintracht side in the final, before adding the DFL-Supercup German Cup to his CV.

Bournemouth, currently in eighth place, are hoping to finish the 2025/26 campaign on a high, as they look to secure European qualification for the first time in the club's history.
"The club’s immediate focus remains firmly on finishing the current campaign as strongly as possible, with the players and staff continuing to show full commitment to achieving positive results and building on the current 13-game unbeaten run," said a club statement.
"Everyone at AFC Bournemouth looks forward to welcoming Marco to Vitality Stadium as he begins his role as head coach in the summer."
The Cherries are tied on 48 points with sixth-place Chelsea and Brentford with just five matches remaining.
