Rennes central defender Jeremy Jacquet has suffered a "serious" shoulder injury ahead of his summer move to Liverpool, the French club’s head coach confirmed.

Habib Beye gave the update on Saturday after Rennes’ match against Lens in Ligue 1, with Lens coming away as 3-1 winners.

Jacquet suffered an awkward fall in the second half of the defeat, and looked in pain as he left the pitch, unable to continue.

Fellow Rennes defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal also suffered an injury, and Beye gave details of their respective problems in an interview after the game.

"For Jeremy, it's his shoulder, and for Abdelhamid, it's muscular," he told reporters. "We'll have time to see, but it's definitely quite serious for both of them."

Jacquet is due to join Liverpool in the summer transfer window at the end of the current season, after the Premier League champions won a hotly-contested race to sign the 20-year-old central defender.

Despite an injury crisis at Liverpool, with Joe Gomez, Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley all suffering from fitness problems, Arne Slot’s side agreed that Jacquet could remain at the Ligue 1 side this season in order to get a deal done.

Chelsea had been in the running to sign a defender as they looked to strengthen the squad for new manager Liam Rosenior, but they instead recalled Mamadou Sarr from sister club Strasbourg.

Liverpool agreed a reported £55 million deal for France under-21 central defender Jacquet, with another £5m in add-ons potentially payable to the French side. Jacquet will sign a five-year deal with the option of another year.

At the time, Slot welcomed the deal by saying it was "very pleasing, of course. He's a very big talent and maybe even more than a talent, but we speak about talent because of his age.

"We weren't the only one interested in him. It's another big compliment to the people working really hard to sign players because we were able to sign such a big talent."

Liverpool play Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday afternoon in their next Premier League fixture.

They sit in sixth place in the Premier League table after playing 24 games, and if they win their game in hand on Chelsea above them in fifth, they will cut the four-point gap to just a single point. City are second on 47 points, also after 24 games.

They trail league leaders Arsenal by nine points, after Arsenal defeated Sunderland 3-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

After a difficult season, Liverpool enjoyed a 4-1 win over Newcastle United in their most recent outing, and defeated Qarabag 6-0 before that in their last UEFA Champions League match as they progressed to the knockout stage.
