Liverpool expect Mohamed Salah to play for club again this season despite muscle injury ahead of summer exit

There had been fears that Salah would not turn out for the club again after what appeared to be a hamstring injury on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

Liverpool held on for a win at Anfield as they moved close to UEFA Champions League qualification under Arne Slot, with the Dutch manager under pressure after a difficult season in which they were unable to challenge Arsenal and Manchester City for the title, after winning the Premier League comfortably last year in Slot’s first campaign.

Had the injury been more serious, then Salah may not have been able to play again this season, 

The 33-year-old recently announced that he would be leaving Liverpool this summer, after around two years of speculation on a potential exit.

While he signed a new contract last summer, tension grew between him and Slot, and while that disagreement was resolved while he was away for the Africa Cup of Nations, he will now leave Anfield on a free transfer at the end of the season.

After two Premier League titles and a Champions League win with the club, he remains hugely popular with supporters, though he has endured a middling season by his standards.

While he has a return of 12 goals across all competitions this season, in each of his previous seasons since joining the club in 2017 he has scored at least 20, including 34 last term.

In a statement on Liverpool’s official website, the club wrote on Wednesday evening: ”Liverpool FC can confirm Mohamed Salah is expected to be available to play again before the end of this season.

”The No. 11 was substituted during the second half of last Saturday’s Premier League win over Crystal Palace at Anfield.

”The issue that caused his withdrawal has now been confirmed as a minor muscle injury.

”It is, however, anticipated Salah will return to action ahead of 2025/26’s conclusion and his departure from The Reds this summer.”

Liverpool's next match is at Old Trafford on Sunday, May 3, against arch-rivals and fellow Champions League hopefuls Manchester United. 

That game is followed by a match at home to Chelsea, on Saturday, May 9.

Liverpool are fourth in the league table with 58 points, level with Aston Villa, directly below them.  Brighton & Hove Albion are in sixth with 50 points. 

The top five Premier League sides are guaranteed to play in the Champions League next season but, depending on results of English clubs in Europe, as many as six sides could feature in the continent’s top-tier European competition in the 2026/27 season.
