Chelsea had a 2025/26 season to forget but optimism has returned to Stamford Bridge after the eye-catching appointment of Xabi Alonso as head coach and the release of the fixtures for the upcoming season.

The Blues will begin their 2026/27 season with a short trip to Craven Cottage to face Fulham, who finished level on 52 points with Chelsea in 2025/26.

After that potentially tricky opener, Alonso's side host Brighton & Hove Albion in the first match at Stamford Bridge.

Then comes a daunting trip to champions Arsenal just three games into the season, an early test of Alonso's ability to make Chelsea contenders.

Chelsea will play away at newly-promoted Coventry City on Boxing Day, before kicking off the new year at home to Newcastle United.

When is Chelsea v Arsenal?

As mentioned, Chelsea play Mikel Arteta's title holders Arsenal early in the season, on September 5 at the Emirates.

The return fixture at Stamford Bridge is on March 13.

The Blues did not beat Arsenal in the Premier League last season, drawing 1-1 at Stamford Bridge in November and losing 2-1 at The Emirates in March.

When is Chelsea v Spurs?

Chelsea's first clash with London rivals Tottenham Hotspur is at home on October 24.

They make the trip to north London on May 8 in what could prove to be a key game for both sides.

Chelsea did the double over Spurs last season, winning 1-0 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium thanks to a Joao Pedro goal, before a 2-1 victory at the Bridge in May.

When did Chelsea last win the Premier League?

It has been almost a decade since Chelsea last lifted the Premier League trophy.

Antonio Conte guided the Blues to a sixth league title in 2016/17, but there have been difficult times in the years since.

Chelsea have finished fourth on three occasions in that period, but slumped to 12th in 2022/23 and 10th last season.

The fans expect better, and Alonso will hope to bring glory back to Stamford Bridge.

Are Chelsea in Europe next season?

No, Chelsea have not qualified for European competition in 2026/27.

A 2-1 loss at Sunderland on the final day of the 2025/26 season meant the Blues missed out on a place in the UEFA Europa League or UEFA Conference League.

While that was a disappointment, it does mean Chelsea will have fewer fixtures and more time to prepare between Premier League matches.

That was the case with Manchester United last season, helping the Red Devils finish third, and more time on the training ground could be beneficial for Alonso.
