Michael Carrick's side have already strengthened their midfield by securing the signatures of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa.
Now they are targeting an ambitious move for Tchouameni, who is on a three-week break after helping France to the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.
The article reads: "SunSport revealed last month that Jose Mourinho does not want to sell the France midfielder but that has not deterred United from making contact with Madrid.
"United shortlisted Tchouameni as a possible target as he falls into their preferred age range of 22 to 26. Tchouameni is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028.
"Reports suggest he has agreed a new contract to 2031 but Madrid have not yet announced anything."

Arsenal told to 'put up or shut up' in Guimaraes pursuit

Arsenal have been told to "put up or shut up" in their pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, reports the Mail.
The Brazilian midfielder has reportedly asked for a move from St James' Park, and he could become the third high-profile player to leave the club this summer following the departures of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
"All discussions so far have come from the Brazilian midfielder's agent and Newcastle are becoming increasingly agitated by what they view as a 'tactical process' with the player becoming distracted by the speculation over his future which is being played out in public," states the outlet.
"Guimaraes has told Newcastle he wishes to talk to Arsenal and have the chance to win more titles but the club stance is he is not for sale.
"Arsenal have been led to believe a deal for the 28-year-old can be achieved for around £75million but Newcastle would need more than that to be persuaded.
"The onus is firmly on sporting director Andrea Berta coming to the table with a proper offer."

Scott wants Chelsea move

Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott wants a move to Chelsea after The Blues had a £64 million bid rejected by the south coast side, claims The Standard.
Scott played a pivotal role as The Cherries secured UEFA Europa League football with a sixth place under Andoni Iraola last term.
But his future at the Vitality Stadium looks uncertain after refusing to sign a new contract amid interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City.
"Standard Sport understands that while Scott wants to join Chelsea, Bournemouth insist that the 22-year-old is not for sale as they look to tie him down to a new contract," reads the report.
"Standard Sport understands that Scott was first offered a new deal in March, with Bournemouth confident they could convince the former Bristol City midfielder to commit his future to the club.
"Since then, talks have slowed, and Scott is now keen to move on as Chelsea accelerate their interest in a bid to ward off other potential suitors.
"Arsenal and Manchester City have also been credited with interest in Scott, but have yet to make a formal approach for the England international."

But are Man Utd and Arsenal leading the way?

The Mirror claims Manchester United and Arsenal are "in pole position" to sign Alex Scott from Bournemouth.
The Bournemouth midfielder is a target of up to eight clubs this summer including Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Everton, according to the outlet.
"Bitter rivals Manchester United and Arsenal are locked in a battle to sign Alex Scott," reads the article.
"But United are Arsenal are now in pole position to land Scott in a £40million deal. It's understood Scott's representatives have held talks with both clubs, and that he will make a decision on his future in the next fortnight.
"Scott is said to favour a move to the Emirates, but is worried about how much game time he will get for Mikel Arteta's English champions."
