For Crystal Palace, victory in the UEFA Conference League final against Rayo Vallecano represents far more than a landmark European triumph - it has also delivered a substantial financial windfall.

Oliver Glasner promised that the best day at Crystal Palace was still to come - and that day arrived amid joyous scenes in Leipzig as Jean-Philippe Mateta's instinctive finish secured a 1-0 victory over their Spanish opponents.

"It's silverware in Saxony for the Eagles!" Adam Summerton summarised for TNT Sports. "Glasner has brought European glory. This is his Leipzig legacy. The most special of memories made.

"Their supporters have truly never had it so good. They have their first European trophy. Despair for Rayo Vallecano, but it is Palace's night in Leipzig. What a moment. Mateta with that poacher's goal. Sheer joy for all connected with this football club."

Palace will earn around £6 million in total for winning the Conference League on the night..

Their total prize money would exclude equal shares, performance-related amounts, and a share for winning the competition.

It is roughly the same figure that Chelsea collected after beating Real Betis 4-1 in the 2025 final in Wroclaw.

For beating Rayo Vallecano alone in the final, Palace will earn €7m (just under £6m), while the losing finalists can at least take comfort from the €4m (around £3.5m) they will take home as consolation.

By the time a club reaches and wins the final, total earnings from the competition are usually much higher than the £5.9m winner's bonus because UEFA also pays for:

Qualifying for the league phase
Wins and draws during the campaign
Progression through knockout rounds
League-position bonuses
TV market pool/value pillar payments

For a club that goes deep and wins the competition, overall UEFA revenue can end up in the €15m-€25m+ (£13m-£22m) range, depending on results and broadcasting allocations.

Winning the Conference League also qualifies Palace for the next season's UEFA Europa League, which carries significantly larger prize money again.

Aston Villa's total prize money for winning the Europa League against Freiburg last week was about €13m (£10.95m), to go along with qualifying for the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League.

There was also a sense of injustice that fuelled Palace's quest for glory.

Last season's FA Cup triumph should have delivered Palace a place in the Europa League. Instead, UEFA demoted the south London club to the Conference League after ruling that John Textor held a controlling interest in both Palace and Lyon, who had also qualified for the competition.

Now Palace have turned that frustration into history.

Mateta told TNT Sports: "I feel fantastic! I feel fantastic! We did it! First time in Europe and we did it. Now I just want to celebrate. This guy [Joel Ward] has to celebrate with us.

"We gave everything. I told you about the intensity they will have and I am tired right now, I gave everything. That's why we won today.

"I am always with the fans. They have supported me a lot as a player. They are always behind us. We did it for them too."

Wednesday provided the culmination of the club’s first European campaign - and was also be Glasner’s final match in charge.

Glasner had revealed on Tuesday that his squad gave him an emotional send-off, hosting a party for the departing manager on the eve of the Conference League final.

But the Austrian insisted there would be one perfect parting gift: victory over Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig and a place in the Europa League next season.

"They had a nice farewell to me, and then I said a few words," said Glasner, who previously lifted the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022 and confirmed in January that he would step down at the end of the season.

"I said for me that the best thing would be winning tomorrow, because then the players would be in the Europa League next year, and then we get what we should have got this year."

Glasner said he hoped to watch his former side continue their rise from afar, believing the mentality established during his tenure could carry Palace deeper into European competition.

"I would like to watch on TV that they start with the desire and the confidence that we can win the Europa League as well," he added. "This would make me really happy, because then I think we created a mindset altogether where, in the end, it’s always successful.

"That doesn’t mean that you win a trophy every single year, but in the end, you will always get the best out of every single player. That’s why I hope that we win tomorrow and these players can play European football again next year."

The 51-year-old has already overseen one of the most remarkable periods in Palace's modern history, guiding the club to Community Shield success in August after delivering their first major trophy with last year's FA Cup win.

The victory over Rayo marks the perfect way for Glasner to sign off as Palace boss, but for a club of Rayo Vallecano's stature, an additional €7m as winners of the competition would have been significant.

In the build-up to Wednesday's final, the size of the only club shop in Vallecas on the outskirts of Madrid caught the media’s attention for its one-in-one-out policy. In some cases, the shop has even been shut during official working hours.

The Estadio ‌de Vallecas - a tiny, concrete cauldron that houses just under 15,000 - would have expected an overdue face-lift had Rayo prevailed in their first European final.

Earlier this season, players and coaching staff complained about "obsolete infrastructure" at both their stadium and the training ground - but it remains to be seen if owner Raul Martin Presa reinvests any runners-up prize money into the facilities that defied the odds to carry the Spanish club to the brink of history.
