UEFA Women's Champions League: Arsenal through to second round in qualifying with narrow win over Rosenborg

Arsenal beat Rosenborg 1-0 to secure a place in Monday's draw for the second round of the UEFA Women's Champions League. The Gunners were in firm control, registering 30 shots, but were unable to find the end product aside from Frida Maanum's early winner. Elsewhere, Celtic, Benfica and Sporting all passed through round one, while last year's quarter-finalists Ajax were dumped out by Fiorentina.

The first round of the UEFA Women's Champions League wrapped up on Saturday with Arsenal earning a place in Monday's draw and moving a step closer to the group stage after a 1-0 win over Rosenborg.

It was a frustrating match for Jonas Eidevall's side, who registered 30 shots with just five on target and finished with 80.9% possession over the 90 minutes at Borehamwood.

Ultimately, Frida Maanum's early goal for The Gunners was enough to get the job done.

Some calamitous Rosenborg defending at a cross saw the ball fall sweetly for the Norway international and she made no mistake.

Arsenal had a glut of chances, with Alessia Russo, Mariona Caldentey, Caitlin Foord and Maanum all going close.

The hosts were also unlucky not to be given a penalty when Selma Sol Magnusdottir appeared to shove Leah Williamson at a corner.

A second goal never came for Arsenal despite a wealth of chances and they could not replicate the 6-0 thrashing of Rangers earlier in the week.

Despite the timid scoreline, The Gunners have done enough to progress to the next round of qualifying.

The draw for the second round of qualifying, where Manchester City also enter the competition, is on Monday, September 9 at 12:00 UK time.

Elsewhere, Celtic beat Lithuanian side Gintra FC 2-0 thanks to goals from Shannon McGregor and Katherine Loferski.

Having gone all the way to the quarter-finals in last year's competition, Ajax were dumped out prematurely thanks to a late goal by Madelen Janogy of Fiorentina to secure a 1-0 win.

Meanwhile, Portuguese champions Benfica earned a dominant 4-0 victory over Bosnian club SFK 2000 to make it to round two.

Paris FC, who knocked out Arsenal at this stage last year, beat Sparta Praha 2-0 in Linkoping.

Galatasary thrashed BIIK-Shymkent 5-0 thanks to a hat-trick from teenage Senegalese signing Diallo Hapsatou Malado. It marks the first time a Turkish team have made it through the opening rounds in 11 seasons.

The round two draw in Nyon will set 12 ties to be played, deciding who joins automatic group-stage entrants Barcelona, Lyon, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.

The two-legged tie will be played over the final two midweeks in September with the group stage running from October through December.
