However, the French frontline does not even need to pass the ball to get their opponents on the back foot.

Simply put, if Spain allow France to run at them, they will struggle, but if they sit back and try to keep things tight, then Olise could produce a pass that will cut through them like a knife through butter.

A daunting task for any defence, but could Spain's back four be tailor-made to deal with them?

Defending, the Spanish way

At Estadio Azteca, England fans' nerves were shredded by a backs-to-the-wall defensive display against Mexico - exacerbated by Jarell Quansah's red card - but they astutely cleared any threatening deliveries that came their way.

It worked, with The Three Lions holding on to book their place in the quarter-finals.

However, that is not the Spanish way.

Luis de la Fuente's side may have only conceded one goal at the tournament, but they have done so without parking the proverbial bus.

Spain do not have a player in the top 25 for clearances or blocks, suggesting that their defensive solidity is not just due to a deep line and guts.

They also do not have a player in the top 25 for errors leading to goals, proving they have been able to keep calm under pressure in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

What they do have, is a defence that is an integral part of a broader gameplan.

Spain have controlled games with accurate passing and by keeping a firm grip on the tempo of the match, with their defenders playing a key role in an approach that has seen them register the highest possession percentage at the tournament.

Pau Cubarsi and Aymeric Laporte, in particular, have stood out as two of the best defenders at the tournament in possession.

They are both in the top five for line-breaking passes at the World Cup, along with their holding midfielder, Rodri.
