'Normally it should be a little bit strange' - Noni Madueke says no jealousy as he vies with Bukayo Saka for England World Cup spot

Noni Madueke has admitted his close friendship with his club colleague Bukayo Saka means there is no jealousy as they vie for the same spot in the England team at this summer's FIFA World Cup in North America.

Saka and Madueke are team-mates for Arsenal, bonded as juniors, and have remained close.

The two are vying for the same spot on the right-hand side of England’s attack at the World Cup, with Madueke starting the first two games against Croatia and Ghana - with Saka kept back following an Achilles issue.

Saka was let loose for his first start of the tournament in the 2-0 win over Panama, while Madueke came on for his Gunners team-mate shortly after the hour mark.

With a clash against DR Conga in the last 32 coming into view on Wednesday, Madueke said there is no animosity between the two.

”It’s well documented that we’re very close,” Madueke said at a press conference.

”Normally it should be a little bit strange [between two players who play in the same position]. But it’s not and I feel like it doesn’t affect our relationship whatsoever.

”We want the best for each other when each other plays, because that means if he plays well, I play well, then England and Arsenal have a better chance of winning.

”In terms of how we differ, I think I thrive in space and he thrives in congestion.”

Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel has an embarrassment of attacking riches to call on and, if he is given the nod against DR Congo, Madueke says he is ready to help England in their push for World Cup glory.

Asked if he was ready to produce in the big moments, he said: ”You have to feel like that, you’re a top player, you’re here for a reason.

”You’re playing for your country on the biggest stage and you have to have that excessive confidence in your ability because, at the end of the day, alongside your team-mates on that pitch, it’s down to you to deliver.

”Whatever gets you in that mindset to be able to do that, I feel like that’s good.”

While Saka has a wealth of tournament experience since being called up by former Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate in 2020, this is Madueke’s first time on the biggest stage.

”It’s been a good experience,” he said of his first taste of tournament football.

”The first objective was achieved [getting out of the group], so I’m really happy about that and I’m looking forward to the knockout stages now.

”It’s a dream come true to compete in the World Cup. I’m grateful for the opportunity and like I said, knockout football is where it’s at, so I’m trying to be at my best for that.”
