Marc Marquez celebrates MotoGP Constructors' Championship win at Grand Prix Catalunya but rues Alex's crash - ‘He will have another chance’

Ducati Lenovo won the MotoGP Constructors' Championship on Saturday after Marc Marquez scored a surprise victory in the Grand Prix Catalunya Sprint race. Marc won courtesy of an unexpected error from his younger brother, BK8 Gresini rider Alex Marquez, and was able to claim maximum points. The full-length race takes place on Sunday, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Grand Prix Catalunya Sprint winner Marc Marquez celebrated Ducati’s MotoGP Constructors' Championship win but was disappointed it came at his brother’s expense.

Marc started the race in third spot, and it had appeared that his younger brother, BK8 rider Alex Marquez, was set for victory to finally end Marc's winning streak.

The circuit in Spain favoured Alex as a result of the number of right-hand turns, and relatively few left-handers which usually give Marc an advantage over the rest of the pack, given his exceptional ability when taking those turns.

Alex extended his lead at the start of the race but then wiped out at Turn 10 under little pressure, and Marc was able to swoop in for the victory.

The younger man was visibly frustrated, as were his team in the garage, and it was left to Ducati Lenovo to celebrate their win, which had looked far from certain when Alex had found what looked to be his best form after a couple of months of setbacks.

"Of course, I’m happy for the victory, for the Ducati Lenovo team, and we won the Constructors' Championship," said Marc to TNT Sports after winning.

He then admitted that he had given up hope of winning the Sprint until his brother had his crash, suggesting that he had resigned himself to a rare second-place finish.

He added: "Unfortunately, Alex crashed. I had already given up as he was faster than me.

"When I gave up, maybe he relaxed a bit too much and crashed on Turn 10. He will have another chance tomorrow as he has the best pace."

Laverty: Championship ‘means a lot to Ducati’

Speaking to TNT Sports after Marquez's surprise win, Michael Laverty thought the Italian team would be delighted to have their hands on the MotoGP Constructors' Championship so early in the season, though the win had been a long time coming.

Laverty said: "It means a lot to Ducati, to Marc, and the team to deliver it so early in the season.

"They've got some of the best riders on the grid and six bikes. Not quite a foregone conclusion, but we did expect it."

Fellow TNT Sports pundit Sylvain Guintoli enjoyed a more action-packed Sprint than spectators have become accustomed to.

"It was chaos," he observed. "I thought it was brilliant. Sprint races have been a little bit not boring, but sort of settled.

"The featured race on Sunday has always been better, and this was really good. We had a real fight. I just feel sorry for Alex Marquez, the race was there [for him to win]."

Alex will have the chance of another victory on Sunday during the full-length race, which will be shown live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

If results go in Marc's favour, the older brother will then have the chance to potentially win the 2025 MotoGP title in Misano, in San Marino, next weekend.
