Saracens star Olivia Apps reveals how she has 'changed the game' in this season's PWR ahead of showpiece final against Trailfinders Women

Saracens' Canadian star Olivia Apps talks to TNT Sports about her successful individual season, as her side prepare to face Trailfinders Women in the Premiership Women's Rugby final this Sunday, June 28.

Apps has been a hugely influential figure for Saracens this season, having signed for the club following the 2025 World Cup.

She joined up with a considerable Canadian contingent already plying their trade in north London, and took to life so swiftly at the club that she was named PWR Player of the Season at the recent Rugby Awards.

Together with her individual recognition, Apps will now go for PWR glory on Sunday, as Saracens take on Trailfinders at the Twickenham Stoop, live on TNT Sports and HBO Max.

And she revealed what it is that helped her make such a good impression in her first season.

"I think for me what's really brought my success is the crossover from sevens," Apps told TNT Sports.

"That individual athleticism has allowed me to find space really easily on the field.

"Credit to the Canadian team and the style of rugby that we play, I think I'm able to bring that into Saracens and add a little bit of unpredictable rugby that I think has changed the game a bit this year with the PWR.

"I think that uniqueness in my game has allowed me to play the rugby I want to play."

Reflecting on her team's overall campaign, that has often mirrored her daring style, the 27-year-old added: "I've been watching Saracens the last few years because I have a few Canadian team-mates that play.

"For us this year, just having more confidence and courage to play a bit more expansive rugby and trying different things.

"With the calibre of athletes we have, we can really do what we want. We have Zoe Harrison at 10, we have a phenomenal back row, we have a lot of internationals, so it allows us to play really exciting rugby.

"We're trying to grow every game and stay competitive, so game after game I think we're really growing in a really positive way."

Apps being given the Player of the Season gong was richly deserved, with many fans savouring her ability to spot gaps and make full use of them with her acceleration and elusiveness.

A look at the stats shows she notched 11 tries this term, a remarkable number for a scrum-half and just one off the season high of 12, shared by May Campbell, Mia Venner, Bo Westcombe-Evans and Rhona Lloyd - with four of those five being wingers.

She also made 20 clean breaks (with all six players above her in the standings, again, wingers), as well as 19 offloads, in a nod to how watchable her style has been.

While Apps and her team-mates will hope for glory on Sunday, they will come up against a Trailfinders side who - while not in possession of a good recent record against Saracens - do have momentum behind them.

They may have finished fourth in the table in the regular season, but they stunned Gloucester-Hartpury in the semi-finals - a team who were going for their fourth PWR title in a row - and have plenty of individual and collective talent in their ranks to threaten another upset.
