Dan Sheehan toasts Ireland's stunning Six Nations win over England after tuning out criticism - 'One of the best we have had'

Ireland achieved a record away win over England at Twickenham on Saturday, a result which hooker Dan Sheehan believes is "one of the best we have had." The visitors, going for the Triple Crown, scored five tries in a 42-21 Six Nations victory over Steve Borthwick's team, who must now "take responsibility" for the performance, according to their captain Maro Itoje.

Dan Sheehan has explained how Ireland blocked out the noise before their Six Nations game against England, "tapping into" the support they got at Allianz Stadium to record a record victory.

The visitors scored five tries in a stunning 42-21 win at Twickenham on Saturday.

And hooker Sheehan, who was among the try-scorers, said the team was driven on by the support they got at Twickenham to deliver a famous victory.

"We're such a hungry group, we believe in ourselves a lot," Sheehan told ITV Sport. "We've been under the pump from the media, but we had big support here and we tapped in to that. That performance is one of the best we have had.

"We stuck together really well and ignored people saying 'Ireland need regenerating.' When we all come together, we can make special things happen. To get a win at Twickenham is pretty special.

"All the talk of England putting pressure on us, we countered that really well."

Sheehan spoke about the confidence that head coach Andy Farrell, once an England player, continues to give the team.

"He just reminds us that if we get our systems right, we have a plan to beat anyone," Sheehan added. "He gives us incredible belief. You look outside the group and there isn't too much belief.

"But he and the coaching group have made us believe and helped us put a performance in today."

England captain Maro Itoje said he and his team-mates, beaten by Scotland a week earlier, must "take responsibility" for their performance.

"The first half, we turned the ball over too much and weren't clinical in their half," Itoje told ITV Sport. "It wasn't the result or performance that we wanted, so as players we have to take responsibility and be better.

"Ultimately, we were not accurate. We got into good positions, but we didn't come away with points. It's not good enough and we'll be working hard to get it right.

"We need to look after the ball, make sure our possession is accurate. We turned the ball over too much."

Farrell had demanded an improvement from his team after the opening Six Nations games - and he has been delighted with the response.

He told ITV Sport: "I am ecstatic for the players, mainly, and for the fans who turned out today in the thousands.

"I'm just trying to get a moment to think about the people at home watching, it must be nice to be Irish today.

"I didn't really care if we won or lost, I just wanted us to learn and get better from what we have shown in the first games. I'm unbelievably proud of the lads."
