Kyren Wilson pips Judd Trump in epic final-frame decider to seal 2025 Players Championship title

Hello and welcome to live updates from the Players Championship final in Telford. The showpiece occasion sees defending world champion Kyren Wilson and undisputed world No. 1 Judd Trump chase the ÂŁ150,000 first prize. It is the first time that Wilson has reached the final, while for Judd Trump it is the third time he has done so - and he triumphed on both his previous occasions.

Kyren Wilson edged Judd Trump 10-9 in a thrilling Players Championship final.
After Trump took a 2-0 lead, the pair were never separated by more than a frame until Wilson moved 7-5 in front, a lead he soon extended.
But Trump fought back, saving himself when he looked poised to go 9-5 down and closing to 8-7. Then, when Wilson moved to within a frame of the trophy, he recorded his 92nd century of the season to force a decider.
Both players had chances to close out from there, but eventually Trump took one long pot too many, Wilson cleared, and took his fourth ranking title of the season.
Up next is the Tour Championship in Manchester, before the elite of the sport head to the Crucible for the World Championship.

He's well happy, congratulating Judd for speaking so well after losing so close a match. He's got his kids with him and it's so special to win; he's now on 10 ranking titles, same the legend Jimmy White. He has to wash his hands after every frame, he says, because he gets nervous, then says it's a healthy rivalry that's developing between him and his opponent. And that's about it.
JUDD SPEAKS
He's never experienced anything like happened with the white before – it was very light and taking off like a ping-pong ball. He thought it'd be a great standard but neither of them could play their best; he congratulates Kyren and his family, looks forward to more, and you can see this is hurting him. He hopes conditions are perfect next time and they can put on some great snooker.

A fourth ranking title of the season for Kyren – not many have done that – and a classic match. I can't wait for more, because these two are going to give us that.

Neither player has refused much this week, but Judd might regret going at that red he misses. Kyren is going to beat him in a final for the third time this season!

Judd has a go at steering a long one to corner, he's leaving the world if he misses ... and he does! Another chance to win it, and this is one that Kyren should not spurn. He's sprinting around the table like he's worried someone might take it away from him.

Judd looks to clip pink potting red, in the process breaking the pack, but he misses, so goes at it off the brown ... and misses the pot, fortuitously leaving the white on the top cushion. Tenser and tenser!

With the yellow hiding much of the table, Kyren misses a skinny one, hitting second time and getting everything safe. But has he left a double? Judd looks to fancy it ... and he clatters it down! Off the blue, though, he catches a red too full, killing the white in the process ... but will he have a go at jabbing an oblique cut to middle? Yes he will! AND IT'S THERE! Kyren taps his leg in appreciation, a black just about goes down and, still chasing, he's not on the blue ... so takes on a minging yellow and that's there too. This is some break already, and it's barely even started.

Kyren loves visits like this, where it's all on the line, or has at least convinced himself he does. He picks off loose reds, but a poor shot leaves him straight on a black and shortly afterewards he riolls into the pack. Judd will do more than break-off in this frame.

A handshake, an ovation, and off we go, Judd to break. What a match this has been. Oh, and he leaves a cut to left corner ... which Kyren creams into the leather! He'll be feeling hard done to after the ill luck of the last frame, but he's back bang at it now!

Yup, a 103, the first century of the final, and Judd's 92nd of the season. He's eight away from ÂŁ100,000, but he won't be thinking about that now; hit's a one-frame shoot-out to decide the trophy!

Judd fondles a pink into left corner, which means it's a red to right for the frame ... and it's there. To make sure, though, a pink to right-middle ... and that's there too! Can he parlay the visit into a ton?

Judd's been the better player the last few frames and he's potting slickly now. There's so little between these two that it's totally unsurprising a decider looks imminent. The table is there to be emptied.

Kyren beat Judd in the final of thwe NI Open 9-3, but this one always looked likely to be tight. Kyren, though, goes into the pack off the pink, it opens nicely ... and a red drops into left corner! That is some ill-arse luck, and now Judd has an opportunity to force a decider!

Judd misses a longun by a way, takes it to baulk with the white, and Kyren's in as he attempts to secure the tournament. There's a lot of work to do, but better standing up than sat down.

This is a huge visit and he cuts home that red near the cushion ... only to miss pink looking to get on to the yellow! It runs safe, to the side rail, but will Judd take on the yellow from next to it? Of course he will, the green is then sent long to right corner, and this is fantastic work from Judd who also bins brown; But can he deal with the pink?

Kyren cuts well from left side to right corner, closes the gap with blacks, and if he keeps doing so won't need the colours. There is a red on the side rail, though it's not far from right corner.

Kyren just can't get a handle on what the white's doing and he leaves Judd a go at one to middle; he has a think then has a go, missing. So Kyren prods into left corner, cuts the black back ... and he's on the last red, just about. He'd be delighted to get out of these opening two frames 1-1.

A poor positional shot means a blue and a trip to baulk ... doesn't get the shot right and now he's got to attack the penultimate red from in the jaws of left corner. And he doesn't really get near so we're back playing safety, both players now having spurned chances to win it, except Kyren wants a word with the ref. He says the white's no use, Judd agrees, and I think there'll be a change for the next frame. It's nuts how well-matched these two are.

Kyren loves how solid he is under pressure, and knows he absolutely must dish here. So far, so chill.

A ridiculous blue opens the pack, spin and gas off two cushions; brilliant. From here, you expect the frame to disappear, and if that's how it goes, Kyren will feel he must win the next frame. But what on earth?! He undercuts to right corner; was that a kick? Either way, now it's Kyren with the table at his mercy.

Left a chance off the break, Judd misses to left-middle, but he soon profits from an effort to slide a tight one to the green bag; he spends a while wondering if it goes, to discover it passes nicely. He's quickly at the business end, bossing red-blacks.

Judd lays a snooker and Kyren flukes a return one off his escape, so Judd hits, hopes ... and pots it! This game. Then potting blue, he snookers himself on yellow and ahahahahaha! he only flukes that too, this time escaping from himself. THIS GAME! Kyren is not sniggering.

Not much! Judd now misses one he shouldn't, cueing across a blue, and that should mean the frame ... but just before I hit "update", Kyren gets careless and doesn't get himself an angle from which he can pot the final red. So he plays safe, frame in the balance.

Goodness, out of nowhere, Kyren misses a sitter to left corner; the gorgeous shots he played, to ruin them with that! He's been more chuffed, it's fair to say, but what will it cost him?

But he needs to take on a blue to the green for a mid-distance red ... and dispatches both beautifully. But he soon runs out of position, playing back to baulk ... and has Kyren spotted a plant? Poor break from Judd and Kyren's in immediately, slotting to left corner. I love his certainty about the table and he reckons he's getting a flick on a red to bring the black into play; he's disappointed not to. Still, though, he's potting nicely, a plant to left corner keeping the run in progress ... and he's on the pink to middle, just about. But have a look! I don't know if he expects it to roll off, but you can tell it's undercut immediately. Chance for Judd!

His safety-game is now one of the best around; it goes a long way towards negating the tactical smarts that got Kyren his Crucible wins. And tonight is a shoot-out; he's more than capable of playing well enough for long enough to render irrelevant anything his opponent does. His top level is the higher level and the way he's playing, he very hard to beat over a shortish race; I fancy him to shade it, but I'd be not one iota surprised if he loses.
KYREN
He really fancies himself, in the best possible way. He was certain he'd become world champ, he did, and since then he's playing with so much aggression and authority. Over the stretch, he reckons his all-round game is a match for Judd's blazing potting; he's proved it in Sheffield and, more recently, in the NI Open, Xian Open and Masters.
WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN TONIGHT?
I don't know! And anyone who says they do is lying. These two are so well-matched, they've both got serious stones, and we might just be seeing the latest iteration of an all-time great rivalry.

It feels almost trite to wang on about how good this is going to be, but how good is this going to be? We've got perhaps the two best players in the world, both playing close to their best, and level before a Sunday-night eash to determine which of them win the trophy.
Nor is it just them, or this trophy. As the Cruce draws ever nearer, we've got Kyren, the champ, and Judd, the best, in prime form; we've got Neil Robertson and John Higgins getting there; Mark Selby not far off; Luca Brecel improving; Ronnie O'Sullivan to come back; and who even knows who'll hit a seam in qualifying?
Bring it on.
World No. 1 Judd Trump and world champion Kyren Wilson ended the first session of the Players Championship final in Telford all square at 4-4 before they play to a finish on Sunday night.
Two-time winner Trump made the brighter start to the day with breaks of 90 and 58 before Wilson responded, with runs of 55 and 81 helping him restore parity at 2-2.
With both men committed to attack and very little safety, Trump regained the lead at 3-2 only for Wilson to respond by snaring the next two frames.
A missed pink along the top cushion by Trump enabled Wilson to pinch the sixth frame by five points on the black, before a 74 break saw the world No. 2 lead by the odd frame in seven.
But Trump regained his composure to level matters and leave the final delicately poised at 4-4, ahead of the closing session on Sunday evening (7pm GMT start).
The first player to 10 frames claims the trophy and ÂŁ150,000 first prize, with Wilson chasing a third ranking final win over Trump this season following his victories at the Northern Ireland Open and Xi'an Grand Prix.

Kyren sticks red up attempting the swerve shot and he says to Judd that is enough. 4-4 it ends. First player to 10 tonight will claim the title. THey will return

Think 4-4 would be about the right outcome from this first session, but still work for Judd to do. Left with a tough cut on a mid-range red. Very well handled and he gets a nice nudge to come out on the brown. Every chance now of getting this frame finalised in his favour.

Superb shot by Trump to crack open reds off another red, but he then misses a red down table to yellow pocket. Didn't expect to see that come back out. But Wilson can't bag the long red. So Judd isn't punished.

But he misses pink along top cushion. Didn't roll it. Went for pace and pink comes back. Also doesn't get cover on black and Wilson mops up pink and black to level up at 3-3.

Judd with a superb long red to break the impasse. Looking to launch the counter punch as he rapidly reaches 26 before nudging in final red along top cush. In goes the black and he is on the yellow. Needs up to the pink for a 4-2 lead.

But position is found wanting and Kyren rolls the white safe. First scrappy frame of this final, but just as important to win.

Kyren splashing open the reds at the earliest convenience. Very aggressive levels of play from both players in this final. Nice red is holed by Kyren with rest and he controls the pot to land on black. But then misses a tricky cutback red. What has Judd got in response.

11 minutes and 38 seconds is the average frame time of this final. Trump sneaks in another fine long red before dropping in the yellow to right centre. Goes for a double on a red, but doesn't make dry land. Wilson left with a long red chance. And in it goes to yellow bag. Attack is the name of the game.

Outside chance of a century here, but not easy with red on right rail. Breaks down on 79 as a red with rest doesn't drop, but the lead is back with the Juddernaut. 3-2 ahead now.

This has been a ruthless response from Judd. Has never looked like missing since Kyren missed that easy red. No wonder Wilson was furious with that error.

Trump looking to advance his case after being sat out of matters over the past two frames. Reds are opened up, but Judd with a nice recovery pot on a red bridging over another red. In goes blue to right centre. Very decent chance to regain the advantage in this final.

Opens up reds by slotting tough red to right centre, but can't can the thin cut on black from mid-range. No 147, but the match is level. It is as you were in Telford.

A THIRD FINAL OF SEASON FOR WORLD'S TOP TWO
One world title each for these two players, Trump in 2019 and of course Wilson last year. Plenty of pedigree in the game's biggest tournaments for the two form horses of the campaign. Kyren with victories over Judd in the Northern Ireland Open final (9-3) and the Xi'an Grand Prix final (10-8) this season. Should be quite the day and night if the Ace in the Pack plays his cards right.
HIGGINS HITS BACK AT HENDRY COMMENTS
John Higgins has refuted claims by Stephen Hendry that he is playing too slowly, following his 6-4 loss to Judd Trump in the semi-finals of the Players Championship in Telford. Hendry described Higgins as a "tough watch" as he fell 3-1 behind before recovering strongly to level at 4-4, with Trump producing peak form to win the final two frames. The world No. 1 faces Kyren Wilson in Sunday's final.
