Summer McIntosh wins 200m medley for third gold of Paris 2024 Olympic Games as USA's Alex Walsh disqualified

Canada's Summer McIntosh, 17, continued her dream Olympic debut, claiming her third gold medal with victory in the women's 200m individual medley final. McIntosh trailed USA's Alex Walsh with 25m remaining, but blitzed the freestyle leg to take the win. Walsh was later disqualified for an illegal turn, meaning Katie Douglass and Kaylee McKeown took silver and bronze respectively.

Canada’s Summer McIntosh produced a stunning final 50m to catch and pass USA’s Alex Walsh – who was later disqualified – for her third gold medal of the Paris 2024 Games.
Walsh looked set to become the Olympic champion but could not hang on as 17-year-old McIntosh stormed to the finish on the freestyle leg.
Walsh lost her silver medal when she was adjudged to have made an illegal move when switching from backstroke to breaststroke.
Replays showed the American had turned fully onto her front before touching the wall and making the turn, which is not permitted under Olympic rules.
She held her head in her hands when she learned her fate, but there was little complaint.
USA’s Kate Douglass set the early pace and inherited silver as a result of Walsh’s DQ, with Australia’s Kaylee McKeown taking bronze.

McIntosh was behind for the majority of the race but saved her best for last. Walsh led at halfway and increased her advantage to more than half a second with a strong third 50m breaststroke before the Canadian rapidly closed the gap over the final 25m to take the victory.
In winning, McIntosh continued her remarkable debut in the Olympics and becomes Canada’s first athlete to win three golds at the same Games.
Milak takes first gold of Games
There was relief on the face of Kristof Milak after the Hungarian won a tight men’s 100m butterfly final to capture his first gold medal of the Paris 2024 Games.
Milak lost his 200m Olympic butterfly crown to magic man Leon Marchand but softened that blow by pipping Canada’s Josh Liendo to the 100m butterfly title.
It was a double podium for Canada, with Ilya Kharun taking bronze.
Liendo was ahead of Malik at the turn but saw his lead slowly eroded over the final length. The approached the wall neck and neck but the Hungarian timed his touch to perfection.
Malik stopped the clock at the end of a stroke for a time of 49.90 seconds, whereas Liendo’s finish was untidy as he finished 0.09s adrift.
Sjoestroem sets new Olympic record in 50m freestyle semis
In the women’s 50m freestyle semi-finals, Sweden’s Sarah Sjoestroem set a new Olympic record to qualify first for tomorrow’s final.
Sjoestroem claimed gold in the 100m final on Thursday and will be the favourite to add the 50m title to her roll of honour.
Great Britain’s Anna Hopkin finished fifth in the second semi-final, with her time of 24.50s not quick enough to book a spot in the final.
Gretchen Walsh, who set the second-fastest time of 24.17s, was the only US swimmer to qualify.
China will have two representatives in the final in Zhang Yufei and Wu Qingfeng, while Shayna Jack and Meg Harris will line up for Australia.
Poland’s Katarzyna Wasick, who won the first semi-final, and Slovenia’s Neza Klancar round out the eight finalists.
