French Open champion Coco Gauff honours Althea Gibson, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Zina Garrison for 'breaking barriers' after first-round win

Coco Gauff began the defence of her French Open title in emphatic style with a second-set onslaught from the No. 4 seed defeating compatriot Taylor Townsend.

On Court Philippe-Chatrier, the two American stars faced off seven years after their first and only meeting - when Townsend beat a 15-year-old Gauff over three sets in Charleston.

In the intervening years, Gauff has won two major titles and established herself among the sport's elite - and she made her lofty status evident with a strong performance and 6-4 6-0 win in the baking Paris sun, despite falling a break behind.

Tuesday marked the 70th anniversary of Althea Gibson's historic title at Roland-Garros. She became the first Black woman to win a Grand Slam title when she beat then reigning champion Angela Mortimer and Gauff paid tribute to Gibson, alongside others who helped to "break barriers" in sport.

"I think Taylor and I playing on Philippe-Chatrier is a direct product of Althea Gibson," Gauff said on-court. "It’s an honour to be able to play today.

"It shows the importance of breaking barriers in all aspects of the world, especially in sport. I’m very grateful for people like her, Serena and Venus [Williams], Zina Garrison and even more for paving the way for us to be out here today."

The early signs of the match were worrying for Gauff, as Townsend immediately settled on the main show court to open up three break-point opportunities. She dispatched the third and consolidated, leaving Gauff chasing the match from the get-go.

The No. 4 seed, though, grew into the match and levelled for 3-3, Townsend succumbing to the pressure of her opponent as she clattered into the net on the first of two break points.

Gauff broke again to serve for the set but looked to be taken the distance by Townsend, who broke back at the fourth time of asking after saving a set point in a tense deuce battle.

The 22-year-old, however, avoided a tie-break, immediately snapping back with another break to take a set lead, and put on a masterclass to close the match with a magnificent bagel set, which put her credentials for another Roland-Garros title firmly on display.

Gauff will face Egyptian qualifier Mayar Sherif in the second round.
