Djokovic, 39, will continue his quest for a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title against the 19-year-old Brazilian, who was in tears after recovering from two sets down to win in the second round.

Djokovic’s hopes of victory in Paris might have been boosted by the shock exit of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Thursday.

Sinner was a potential semi-final opponent for Djokovic, who has been taken to four sets in his two matches so far at the Grand Slam.

Elsewhere, four-time champion Iga Swiatek is also in action on Friday as she faces fellow Pole Magda Linette.

Swiatek has avoided a tricky third-round showdown with Jelena Ostapenko, who has won all six of their previous meetings, after the former French Open winner was beaten by Linette.

Second seed Alexander Zverev takes on France’s Quentin Halys in the night session and two-time runner-up Casper Ruud meets Tommy Paul.

Jakub Mensik returns to the court after collapsing in exhaustion following his gruelling five-set second-round win as he faces Alex de Minaur, who should be fresh after a walkover, while rising star Rafael Jodar is also in action.

When is Djokovic v Fonseca?

Djokovic v Fonseca is the standout match on Friday and was expected by many to be played in the evening session.

Instead, it has been scheduled third on Court Philippe-Chatrier, likely around 2.30pm UK time.

Friday is expected to be another hot day in Paris, so the temperatures could take their toll on players.

Fonseca will be hoping to make a good recovery following his five-set win in the previous round against Dino Prizmic.

The 19-year-old said about facing Djokovic: ”For me it's just a big pleasure. I always talk to my coach, like, 'I want to be in Novak's draw'.

"I just want to have this experience in my life. I think I'm just going to enjoy it. I mean, being in Roland-Garros, third round, for me it's just a dream. I'm going to enjoy every moment playing against an idol, the GOAT of the sport. Hopefully I can do a great match.

"Of course, stepping on the court, of course I'm going to respect him, but trying to make my best and win this match."

When does Swiatek play?

Swiatek opens proceedings on Court Philippe-Chatrier from 11am UK time.

Swiatek has dropped just eight games in her two matches so far, while Linette has twice been taken to three sets.

Linette beat Swiatek when they last met in Miami earlier this year.

When is Ruud v Paul?

Ruud faces Paul in the last match on Court Suzanne-Lenglen.

Ruud is among the leading contenders to win the trophy following Sinner’s exit.

He holds a 4-2 win-loss record against Paul but lost their most recent meeting in Indian Wells in 2024.
