Why there's a 'good chance' that 'scary' Carlos Alcaraz can challenge Roger Federer's Grand Slam total after US Open victory

Carlos Alcaraz ruled New York again as he won the second US Open title of his career. Alcaraz beat rival Jannik Sinner in four sets in the final to win his sixth career major and reclaim the world No. 1 spot. TNT Sports expert Mats Wilander was full of praise for Alcaraz, saying he has no "weakness whatsoever" and could reach the heights of the greats of the game. So how many Slams could he win?

Mats Wilander believes there is a "good chance" Carlos Alcaraz can win 20 Grand Slam titles after his storming victory over Jannik Sinner in the US Open final.

Alcaraz outclassed his rival in four sets to triumph in New York for a second time and reclaim the world No. 1 spot.

Alcaraz has now won six major titles, becoming the second-youngest man to reach that total after Bjorn Borg.

Borg, who retired at the age of 25, finished his career with 11 Grand Slams - and TNT Sports expert Wilander has backed Alcaraz to surpass that number.

"I think he’ll win so much more," Wilander said. "The question is, will he win as much as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Will he win 20 Slams? There is a good chance he will."

Djokovic is the all-time men’s leader on 24 Slams, ahead of Nadal on 22 and Federer on 20.

Alcaraz has won two of the four Slams this year, the US Open and French Open, with the other two going to Sinner, who has won four majors in his career.

The pair have looked a level above the rest of the field on the ATP Tour in 2025, but in the US Open final, which was watched on Arthur Ashe by US president Donald Trump, it was Alcaraz who was clear of his opponent.

"He was so focused, he didn’t make many unforced errors. If he can serve like he did today, I don’t think there is any weakness whatsoever," said Wilander.

"He was as sharp as he’s been all tournament and he was too good. He’s still so young - that’s what scary. He’s got six majors, back to world No. 1 which is huge for him.

"I thought Jannik Sinner was going to come out on top but Carlos Alcaraz - wow - when he plays well he really is the best player in the world. 

"It’s a huge victory. Day in and day out, you play for the world No. 1 ranking. He’s got it back - and it’s not easy to get it back."

Alcaraz is starting his fifth spell as world No. 1 and 37th week overall at the top of the rankings.

Wilander praised the Spaniard as a "great ambassador" for tennis and says he and Sinner "have the tennis world by the hands".

On Alcaraz, Wilander said: "He’s good everywhere. He’s so solid, so nice, the niceness is the best part.

"He’s a great player but he’s so nice, so humble, so youthful and having fun all the time. He’s a great ambassador for our sport. He’s been with the same team since he was very young."

He added: "They both know they have the tennis world by the hands and they’re controlling it. They’re going to split the Grand Slams every year for a very long time to come."
