Emma Raducanu run at Wimbledon ends with defeat to qualifier Lulu Sun in fourth round at All England Club

Britain's Emma Raducanu saw her bright run at Wimbledon ended on Sunday evening as she was defeated by Lulu Sun, a qualifier from New Zealand. Raducanu made a slow start to the encounter, and despite a strong fightback in the second set, she slumped to a frustrating loss in the fourth round. She received medical treatment in the final set but was unable to raise her level sufficiently.

Qualifier Lulu Sun continued her incredible showing at Wimbledon as the New Zealander reached the quarter-finals with another very impressive win, 6-2 5-7 6-2, this time over Britain's Emma Raducanu.

The 23-year-old is making her debut at the All England Club this fortnight, but she was not remotely overawed by being on Centre Court against the home favourite as she immediately stormed into a commanding lead in the opening set.

Raducanu showed great character in responding in the second set, eventually taking it 7-5 after a late break of serve, and the fans in the iconic venue suddenly believed she would continue on to take the victory.

However, Sun held her composure superbly and delivered a strong reaction of her own at the start of the third set with a clinical break of serve to reassert her authority at a crucial moment in the match.

Raducanu, who received medical treatment at a changeover in the final set, could not break back as Sun confidently and nervelessly closed out the victory to continue her remarkable progress at the third Grand Slam of the season.

The 21-year-old Brit will be left to wonder what could have been this fortnight with a relatively open draw and after her encouraging start to the tournament, despite having to withdraw from the mixed doubles with Andy Murray citing stiffness in her wrist.

"I don't really have the words right now..." admitted a stunned and tearful Sun as she attempted to react to what she had achieved.

"I played a bit in juniors and then a couple of pro tournaments. I think just watching the professionals growing up. For example, [Roger] Federer, of course, coming towards the net, and I watched also Steffi Graf versus Martina Navratilova on YouTube.

"It was just so amazing to watch them. Of course, I couldn’t watch them live, but I was taking it all in from the pros, and trying to do that for my game."

In the quarter-finals, Sun will take on Donna Vekic, the 28-year-old from Croatia.
