Jannik Sinner stormed to his first Wimbledon title on Sunday, coming from behind to beat Carlos Alcaraz in four sets on Centre Court. Italian tennis player Lorenzo Sonego was delighted to see his compatriot succeed and says Sinner is now the "best player in the world". Sinner's victory came a month after a crushing defeat to Alcaraz in the French Open final.

Lorenzo Sonego was delighted to see his compatriot and "best player in the world" Jannik Sinner defeat Carlos Alcaraz to become the first-ever Italian Wimbledon champion.
Sinner beat Alcaraz 4-6 6-4 6-4 6-4 to win the title in SW19 for the first time in his career, and the victory gave him a morale-boosting fillip after losing to Alcaraz in an unforgettable five-set French Open final last month.
Speaking to Tuttosport, Sonego explained what the moment meant for Italian tennis as he lavished praise on the mental strength of his former Davis Cup team-mate.
"It was a great moment for all of us Italians, and obviously for me. We've trained together often this season, and we've even played doubles several times throughout our careers," Sonego said.
"I knew Jannik was desperate to bounce back after his incredible defeat at Roland Garros, and he wasted no time. He confirmed he's the best player in the world, especially mentally."
Analysing the route to victory for Sinner against the Spaniard, Sonego picked out what made the difference for the world No. 1.

He observed: "Jannik delivered a great performance from every perspective. He was courageous in the most crucial moments of the match, for example, hitting second serves that annihilated the Spaniard.
"He was very good at coming back after losing the first set and capitalising, despite fighting, on the break he gained at the start of the second set.
"He gradually took away the confidence of the two-time Wimbledon champion and went on to deservedly take the title.
"His emotion was also ours, mine specifically, when I think of all the fans who had never seen an Italian player triumph at Wimbledon.

"It will be a further incentive for all of us and the entire Italian tennis movement to always do better. Coolness and courage are two weapons that only greats like him possess and contribute to reaching the top."
Sonego himself suffered a last-16 exit after losing in four sets to the American Ben Shelton, but he declared himself happy with the experience as he broke into the top 40 once more.
He said: "These were fantastic days at the All England Club, both technically and physically. I enjoyed them and felt really good. I put in some good fights and tried to give my best.

"I'm proud of how my body reacted after a five-hour-plus battle against [Brandon] Nakashima and of the fact that I played on equal terms against Ben Shelton ."
As well as Sinner’s victory, Sonego also picked out the miserable experience of Grigor Dimitrov as a big moment of the tournament.
Dimitrov was two sets up against Sinner in the quarter-finals and had to retire hurt with the potentially decisive third set balanced at 2-2.
Sonego recalled: "The most beautiful victory was certainly Jannik's, the worst was seeing Dimitrov end the match with the Italian in tears.
"The Bulgarian reaffirmed his great talent and his retirement was always touching from an emotional point of view."
