Serena and Venus Williams to play doubles at Wimbledon after receiving wildcard as Nick Kyrgios and Dan Evans also get doubles spots

Legendary tennis duo Serena and Venus Williams will play together in the women's doubles at Wimbledon having been given wildcards by tournament organizers on Tuesday.

Wimbledon announced its initial wildcards on Tuesday, with Venus and Serena taking one of seven for the women's doubles event at the grass Grand Slam, which starts on June 29.

The Williams sisters won 14 Grand Slam doubles titles together - six of which coming at Wimbledon - while also winning three Olympic gold medals as a doubles team, alongside their respective trophy-laden singles careers.

Serena marked her return to tennis aged 44 last week at Queen's. She played doubles alongside Canadian Victoria Mboko, and won their opening match against Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez.

However, their run at the west London tournament came to an early end when Mboko sustained an injury during her singles match against Karolina Pliskova. She later revealed she injured the MCL on her left knee.

Serena's preparations for Wimbledon will continue in Berlin this week when she partners Karolina Muchova in the doubles event.

Neither Serena nor Venus have been named among the seven recipients of singles wildcards at SW19 this year. There is one wildcard left to be allocated.

Speaking at a press conference last week, Serena said: ”I want to play singles and we’ll see if I get there and if not, that’s not my journey right now.”

Venus, meanwhile, returned to the tennis circuit last year, and has since played both singles and doubles. Most recently, she partnered Britain's Katie Boulter at the Madrid Open, where they suffered defeat in the second round.

Venus and Serena last played doubles together at the US Open in 2022, Serena's final tournament before retiring. Nearly four years elapsed before she recently announced she would be returning to the sport.

This year's Wimbledon will mark a decade since Serena and Venus last won a Grand Slam doubles title, which came on the London grass as they beat Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova in the final.

They have a 14-0 record in Grand Slam finals as a doubles team.

Among the other recipients of wildcards, French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska will go straight into the main women's draw following her breakout run in Paris.

She rose over 90 places in the WTA rankings by reaching the final as a qualifier earlier this month, but was not guaranteed a place in the main draw due to Wimbledon using a cut-off date.

All six of the other women who received wildcards are British.

Kyrgios gets doubles wildcard but not singles

In the men's draw, Stan Wawrinka - in his last season before retirement - and Grigor Dimitrov have been awarded automatic qualification.

There was no spot in the initial announcement for former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios.

The 2022 runner-up, who has been beset by injury issues over the past few years, won on his return to action in Stuttgart last week.

But he was then beaten by world No. 104 Sho Shimabukuro in the second round and has pulled out of Halle this week owing to a knee injury.

He was set to play world No. 5 Ben Shelton in the first round of the grass tournament.

Kyrgios has been given a Wimbledon doubles wildcard alongside Alexander Bublik.

The pair played together in Stuttgart and will team up again at SW19.

Britain's Dan Evans has also not got a singles wildcard for Wimbledon, which will be the final tournament of his career before retiring.

Evans, who is playing doubles alongside Henry Searle, criticised Queen's organisers for not offering him a wildcard.

Two men's singles wildcards are still to be announced before Wimbledon, which starts on June 29 and concludes on July 12.
