Emma Raducanu into Canadian Open third round with straight-sets win over Peyton Stearns: 'It means so much'

Emma Raducanu has continued her impressive form, having reached the third round of the Canadian Open thanks to a straight-sets victory over Peyton Stearns. The British No. 1 claimed a 6-2 6-4 win over the American, setting up a contest with Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova. The 22-year-old has now won five of her last six matches following her run to the last four at the Washington Open.

Emma Raducanu said "it means so much" to perform well at the Canadian Open after her straight-sets victory over Peyton Stearns in the second round in Montreal.

The British No. 1, who was born in Canada, reached the third round with a 6-2 6-4 victory over the American.

The result sees the 22-year-old continue her impressive form in the build-up to next month’s US Open, where she will hope to repeat her shock run to the title in 2021.

Speaking afterwards, Raducanu said: "I'm really happy with how I came through in that match.

"I kind of lost my focus at some moments in the second set, and she took advantage, but very happy that I came through against a top opponent and happy to extend my stay in Montreal.

"I just want to say thank you [to supporters], I saw the Union Jack in clutch moments, and I was actually born in Canada, so to me it means so much to do well here."

Raducanu will take on Wimbledon finalist Amanda Anisimova in the third round following the American’s straight-sets win over Lulu Sun.

The Brit, who now has won all three encounters with Stearns, took control of the match with an early break of serve before sealing the opening set with another.

The world No. 33 went a break down in the second set to go 4-2 behind but then won four games on the spin to storm to victory.

Raducanu has now won five of her six matches during the North American summer hard-court swing following her run to the semi-finals at the Washington Open last week, returning to the British No. 1 spot in the process.

She has not lost a set in any of the five victories during that time.

It comes after she impressed at Wimbledon, overcoming former champion Marketa Vondrousova before losing out to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a tightly fought third-round contest.
