Shock Canadian Open champion Victoria Mboko was 'super content' with first-round win, wildcard admits after defeating Naomi Osaka in final

Wildcard Victoria Mboko has admitted that she would have been happy with one win at the Canadian Open after defeating Naomi Osaka in the final. She overcame four Grand Slam champions on her way to victory in Montreal, also beating Elena Rybakina, 2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff and 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin. She can now look ahead to the second round of the Cincinnati Open.

Wildcard Victoria Mboko insists she would have been happy to only make it past the first round after defeating four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka to win the Canadian Open final.

The 18-year-old battled back from a set down to defeat the four-time Grand Slam champion 2-6 6-4 6-1 and win her first WTA title.

Mboko defeated four Grand Slam champions en route to her triumph in Montreal, and also saved a match point in her semi-final victory over Elena Rybakina.

She also vanquished 2025 French Open champion Coco Gauff and 2020 Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin during a sensational run to the final.

Mboko struggled to find the words to describe how she felt after becoming the second wildcard in the Open Era to win the tournament.

"I was super happy to be playing in Montreal for the first time ever. I just remember feeling nervous, but really taking in the moment as much as I possibly could," she said.

"When I won my first round, I was super happy and super content.

"I would have never thought that I would have made it to the final, let alone win the tournament.

"I have so many emotions going through my head, I can't even express it."

The teenager also gave thanks to her opponent Osaka, who Mboko said she "looked up to" when she was younger.

"It’s been an incredible week here in Montreal," Mboko said "I also want to thank Naomi for an incredible match. I’ve always looked up to her when I was really little, so it’s always great to play with an amazing player like you."

"Lastly, I want to thank every single one of you who came to support me throughout this whole week.

"You guys were incredible, and I couldn’t be more grateful."

Having started the year as the world No. 333, Mboko is now expected to surge up to No. 34 in the world rankings following her magnificent performances.

The Canadian star reached the third round of the French Open and the second round at Wimbledon this year.

She will now turn her attention to the Cincinnati Open, where she is scheduled to face Diana Shnaider in the second round on Saturday, August 9.
