Giro d'Italia 2026 Stage 8 recap - Jhonatan Narvaez soars to second win in a week after late escape with team-mate Mikkel Bjerg

Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) claimed a stunning second win of the Giro, reaching out to victory over Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility) on the steep climb to the town of Fermo. Having made it into the successful three-rider break with team-mate Mikkel Bjerg, it was a true team victory, and the third of the week for UAE, despite losing three riders on the opening weekend. 

The 155km Tirreno Adriatico-style stage, which started and finished uphill, and with a series of punchy low category climbs in between, was ripe for a breakaway finish. That meant competition to make the escape was always going to be fierce. It almost didn’t break free at all.

Battling a strong headwind, the furious fight for the break carried on for almost half the stage. Filippo Ganna (Netcompany Ineos) and Alberto Bettiol (XDS Astana) had the best of it, spending almost 50km off the front. They never gained more than 30 seconds of advantage, however, and were brought to heel after 55km that was covered in little more than an hour.

Between kilometres 75 and 80, three riders, Narvaez, Bjerg and Leknessund were able to sustain a break at the same time as a large, natural split occurred in the bunch. That briefly caused panic stations in team Visma-Lease a Bike, whose leader, Jonas Vingegaard, was on the wrong side of it.

After the Dutch squad stitched it back together, a second, 30-rider group, was able to go clear of the bunch. After confirming it contained no one they needed to be concerned about, Visma and Bahrain Victorious, the team of the maglia rosa, were prepared to give everyone ahead of them room to hunt for the stage.

Group two was too disorganised, however, and lacking in quality to drag back the strong, committed trio up front. Time gaps varied, but with Javier Romo (Movistar) in the middle, the top three didn’t look to be in doubt.

The short, sharp slopes of the second half of the stage suited Narvaez down to the ground, which meant Bjerg was on full domestique duty. The Danish TT specialist rode himself into the ground for his team-mate. Leknessund may wonder if the work he contributed cost him watts towards the end of the stage. 

After 60km together, the games began. On the penultimate climb of the stage, Capodarco, Bjerg made an acceleration that Leknessund had no choice but to follow. Narvaez came over the top with a counter-punch, and while the Norwegian was able to hold his wheel, it wasn’t for long. 

Having opened up the gap on Capodarco, despite losing a few seconds on the descent, the early part of the steep final rise up to Fermo was where Narvaez made it count. His lighter frame allowed him to grow the gap to twenty seconds, after which he never looked back.

The result ws still a strong second place for Lekenessund at 32 seconds. In the end his team took third as well, with Martin Tjotta the best of the chase, only 10 seconds further back. 

Despite attacks from the maglia rosa, Afonso Eulalio (Bahrain Victorious), and Jai Hindley (Red Bull-Bora Hansgrohe) in the final km, no gaps were recorded between the GC favourites. The only disruption to the top 10 came as a result of Christian Scaroni (XDS Astana), who infiltrated the second chase group and finished sixth. That saw him bump up seven places in the overall to fourth.

Tomorrow is expected to be a big battle between the GC contenders, but who will come out on top?

With the focus on the front, and pink, it seemed the chasers were a lot closer. Tjotta clearly allowed himself to be carried along and made the most of it for a pretty great set of results for Uno-X.

The Paglia rosa tried an attack under the flamme rouge, and Jai Hindley had a go even closer to the line. There may not have been gaps between the GC favourites, but there wasn't much in it.

A glorious setting, a warm welcome, a full throttle, wonderful win. Leknessund fought to the end, and that's a very good second place. Realistically he couldn't manage more. Despite their setbacks, UAE are on fire.

On the cobbles of Fermo, looking fantastic, Narvaez equally so.

We probably won't know until the end, but with the gradient up to 22% I wouldn't be surprised.

Even Narvaez seems to be under strain here, in the small ring, right at the top of the block. This is where the weight advantage should finish it for UAE's Narvaez.

Leknessund has pulled back four seconds on the descent. And can once again see Narvaez up ahead. Is there another twist in this tale?

The last fifty or so of that climb looked super steep and certainly hurt the lightweight Ecuadorian less. But Leknessund isn't giving up yet.

Perfect for Narvaez, who has 10 seconds over Leknessund.

2km to the top of Capodarco, he doesn't have to knock out his opponent, but any way he can hurt Leknessund now will help him later. Bjerg looks like his job is finished.

He just puts in a few more watts. And then there's the counter-punch from Narvaez. But the Norwegian rider is still standing, for now, keeping a grip on Narvaez's wheel.

And Romo is going backwards too. The win is coming from these three. Don't say the podium is decided, because in a stage race second and third don't take a trip to the podium. This is a small hill on which I will die.

Even if he does make it across - he won't - as Mr Blythe points out, "he ain't gonna have anything left."

The seconds won't matter, but the 2000 Euro purse won't hurt.

Winner of the overall and a stage in the 2022 edition of his home race, the Arctic Race of Norway, he won a stage of the Tour de Suisse in the same year. He's never taken top spot in a Grand Tour but did finish second on Stage 4 in 2023, which had a similar finish to this.

The commentary boys are wondering if he ought to be contributing as much as he has been to this group, or if he might be better shirking a little to improve his own chances of the win.

But that's to Movistar's Javier Romo, who isn't going to be able to make it across on his own.

At 5'23 on the general classification, he's one both Visma and Bahrain will need to be mindful of.
