From cancer battle to leading the 2026 Tour de France: Torstein Traeen claims 'emotional' yellow jersey in piping hot Stage 4

Torstein Traeen is in possession of the yellow jersey at the 2026 Tour de France with the Uno-X Mobility rider hitting a career high having endured a dramatic personal journey in the past four years.

In 2022, the Norwegian rider was diagnosed with testicular cancer after an anti-doping test revealed the illness.

Two months later, he was declared cancer free after having a 15 millimetre tumour in a testicle removed.

Last year, Traeen suffered a five-week spell of concussion symptoms so severe he claimed it was tougher than his previous fight with cancer.

But on Tuesday, he claimed the lead in the general classification by 32 seconds, taking over from incumbent Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) by finishing eighth in Tuesday's Stage 4.

Traeen got into a large 34-man breakaway before surviving the selection to finish in the front group, with Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) winning the stage.

Afterwards, Traeen explained his emotions following the brutal 182.2 kilometre stage, saying it was "emotional" to cross the finish line and see his team-mates.

"I think it's quite hard for me to understand how big it is but you can see the face on my old coach, you can see the face on the soigneur, you can see on everybody how special it is," he said.

"For me at the moment, you don't really understand what's going on. So I think in a couple of days maybe it will sink in, but the Tour is the biggest race in the world and now I just have to enjoy it."

Traeen will now wear the famous yellow jersey in Wednesday's Stage 5, a sprinters stage between Lannemezan and Pau.

He currently sits ahead of Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) in the general classification standings.

Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) are fourth and fifth respectively at 7'53", but will be unfazed with plenty of climbing to come.

Traeen's yellow jersey at the Tour de France continues Norway's summer of success, with the men's football team through to the 2026 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals where they will face England on Saturday.

"I think we are so inspired by Norwegian culture," he explained afterwards. "You can see it now in the football, how much rowing there is. And now we are just a group of guys who have been friends for a long time, who are enjoying every day."

On representing Norway, Uno-X general manager Thor Hushovd added: "We've shown over many years that [Norway] are good at winter sports.

"But now in big summer sports, like track and field, golf, tennis, cycling, soccer. It just makes me proud and I think it makes the riders proud when we kick Brazil out of the World Cup. So we're just in a nice flow.

"It's incredible. It makes Norwegians proud, a small country achieving these things."

Traeen has previous experience of leading a Grand Tour, having briefly held the red jersey in last year's Vuelta a Espana.

TNT Sports pundit Matt Stephens called Traeen's position at the top of the standings "properly powerful".

"He's used to standing on the podium at the Vuelta, but this is different," Stephens said on The Breakaway. "The maillot jaune is the stuff of real dreams.

"He's in a state of real disbelief. But when he gets to tomorrow with that number pinned on, it will be magical."
