Karen Carney backed Khadija Shaw to remain at Manchester City next season, as she struck in injury time and extra time to power her side to the Adobe Women’s FA Cup final at Chelsea’s expense.

Chelsea looked to be cruising to an FA Cup final berth thanks to goals from Erin Cuthbert and Sam Kerr before the hour mark, but Mary Fowler pulled one back for the visitors in the 86th minute. Then, ‘Bunny’ Shaw produced an outrageous twisting equaliser as she fell in the penalty area in stoppage time.

And when Hannah Hampton inadvertently passed straight to Yui Hasegawa in extra time, the Japan international found Shaw with a pinpoint cross that the striker glanced into the net to clinch a date with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Wembley final.

Shaw’s contract expires this summer and on Thursday, The Guardian reported she is set to leave The Citizens, naming Chelsea as the favourites to capture her signature.

Yet Shaw played coy with TNT Sports over where her future lies, while Carney said she believes the runaway Women’s Super League top scorer will remain in sky blue.

”She is the difference maker today, City are out of the game," Carney said on TNT Sports. "Yeah she had missed a few chances but that chest control, bang, goal, back in the game. Changes it. Who else is out there that can guarantee you this?

”She backed herself in many ways, a player that runs her contract out and says ‘I will be in control of my own destiny’. A lot of players would not because they would be scared of getting injured or thinking ‘no, I want to sign the deal’.

"I still think she will be a City player next season."

Shaw played 90 minutes as Manchester City clinched their second WSL title last week which kicked off a tumultuous eight days including speculation about her future and the incredible comeback at Stamford Bridge.

”It has been a mad week to be fair, lots of ups and downs,” Shaw told TNT Sports. ”But I do not care, I always said that I enjoy my time at Man City and I always wanted to do the best that I can to get the club back where it needs to go.

”Obviously, we won the league and now we are one step closer to getting the FA Cup, so let us go.

"After winning the league we wanted to take another step and that is getting to Wembley to try and win another one. It was a very hard game but we stuck together as a team, we grind like we have done all season and that is the result.”

Jeglertz happy to have Shaw ‘for two more games’

Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor refused to comment on The Blues’ links to Shaw, ahead of a summer where she will hope to rebuild a side who have won just the League Cup this season.

Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz was asked if he had been pressuring the board to re-sign his star player.

”No I am not doing that," Jeglertz told TNT Sports. "She knows how I feel and the club knows how we feel, but there are a lot of things going on there that someone else needs to take care of.

”I would like to have the best players in my squad but it is not up to me to comment. Of course, there has been lots of discussions around her for a long time but I am not part of those discussions. I am just really happy to have her for two more games.”
