Marc Skinner ‘really pleased’ to move closer to Manchester City as Manchester United beat Leicester City in Women's Super League

Manchester United edged out Leicester City in the Women's Super League on Saturday. United manager Marc Skinner spoke about the importance of three points and keeping themselves within striking distance of Manchester City at the top of the WSL table. Skinner's team are now within eight points of leaders City, who play Arsenal in north London on Sunday.

Manchester United Women manager Marc Skinner highlighted the importance of keeping some pressure on Manchester City, after a hard-fought 2-0 win over Leicester City on Saturday.
Goals from Julia Zigiotti Olme and Elisabeth Terland earned United all three points against the relegation-threatened Foxes, moving them to within eight points of Women’s Super League leaders City.
Terland came off the bench in the 64th minute to double United's lead in the closing stages, and Skinner is delighted by the wealth of options at his disposal.
"We signed players to give us depth for variation, for adaptation to games, and those players that came in today, and the players that didn’t come in today will give us that," Skinner told Sky Sports.
"All in all, I can be really pleased with the result, because that’s what we’re chasing.
"I want performances, but we need to be ready with those results and keep pressure on at the top."
Skinner's side broke the deadlock in the 13th minute when Zigiotti Olme's cross eluded team-mate Lea Schuller, but still beat Olivia Clark in the Leicester net.
The response from Rick Passmoor's Leicester side was admirable, and referee Stacey Fullicks turned down home penalty appeals after Shannon O'Brien appeared to have been pushed inside the box by Anna Sandberg.
Noemie Mouchon also caused plenty of problems for United's defence, but crucially it was Terland who sealed victory late on.
The Norwegian bamboozled the Leicester defence with some superb footwork, before drilling home a clinical left-footed finish.
"I knew I didn’t have that much time on the pitch today. I just had to show what I’m capable of," Terland said.
"I think we’ve brought in some quality, which obviously gives a bit of competition, but I think I’m a player that wants to show that I want to play as much as I think I should, and I did that today.
"I do what I can control, but then I think the players do the job in the first half as well."
The Foxes have now lost three straight WSL games and sit 10th in the table, two clear of Liverpool at the bottom.
Nevertheless, Passmoor took plenty of encouragement from his side’s performance and said: "I am really proud of this team. If we play like that every week, we'll be fine.
"We're hurting, but you wouldn't want to be with any other group of players at this moment in time."

Skinner's side now turn their attention to the UEFA Women's Champions League and a clash away at Atletico Madrid on Thursday. Meanwhile, Leicester will visit Manchester City in the WSL next Friday.
There are five more WSL games taking place on Sunday. Leicester could find themselves sitting at the foot of the table by the end of the weekend, if West Ham United and Liverpool both win.
