Cole Palmer scored a hat-trick as Chelsea bounced back from their Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Arsenal with a 3-1 victory away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.

After Manchester United’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the lunchtime kick-off, it was important for The Blues to keep tabs on their top-four rivals and they did so in emphatic fashion.

It was a fourth Premier League hat-trick for Palmer – more than any other player in Chelsea history.

He put Liam Rosenior's team in front from the penalty spot after 13 minutes before the England international then doubled the lead in the 35th minute, again from 12 yards. He found the net for a third time three minutes later to become the first player in Premier League history to score three first-half hat-tricks.

The result is sure to keep Liam Rosenior’s side in fifth place, just a point adrift of United above them, while a third defeat in a row means Wolves, who pulled one back through Tolu Arokodare nine minutes into the second period, remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

Arsenal extend lead at top

Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the table with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Sunderland at the Emirates.

Martin Zubimendi broke the deadlock just before the break for the hosts before a second-half brace by Viktor Gyokeres sealed the three points.

It means The Gunners are nine points clear as they continue their pursuit of a first Premier League crown for more than two decades, although second-placed Manchester City are not in action until they visit Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

Villa miss chance to leapfrog City

Aston Villa missed the chance to move above Manchester City into second with a 1-1 draw away to Bournemouth.

Morgan Rogers put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute but Rayan levelled after the break to salvage a point for the hosts.

Unai Emery’s team remain third but have now won just one of their past five in the Premier League, leaving them just three points clear of Manchester United and four ahead of Chelsea.

The point moved Bournemouth up to 11th, though The Cherries could still be passed by Brighton later this weekend.

Brentford sink Newcastle

Brentford’s Dango Ouattara struck in the 85th minute to seal a dramatic 3-2 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park.

Sven Botman gave The Magpies the lead in the 24th minute but The Bees struck back to lead at half-time through a Vitaly Janelt header and Igor Thiago’s penalty.

Bruno Guimaraes then looked to have rescued a point in the 79th minute when he converted from the spot but Ouattara’s stinging effort six minutes later was too hot to handle for Nick Pope and snatched the win for the visitors.

The defeat was a third in a row in the Premier League for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle, who now sit 12th in the table ahead of away trips to Tottenham, Aston Villa and Manchester City.

For Brentford, the strong response after back-to-back losses moved them up into seventh.

West Ham’s resurgence continues

West Ham United sealed another important three points away to Burnley as they continue their push towards safety under Nuno Espirito Santo.

In a vital clash between sides in serious danger of the drop, it was The Hammers who prevailed to make it three wins from their past four.

First-half goals from Crysencio Summerville and Valentin Castellanos were enough for West Ham to secure a 2-0 win and move within three points of Nottingham Forest in 17th position.

Burnley remain on 15 points, eight behind West Ham and 11 from safety.

Everton stun Fulham late

Everton found two late goals to snatch a 2-1 victory from the jaws of defeat away to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

A Vitaliy Mykolenko own goal gave the hosts the lead in the first half, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall levelled 15 minutes from time before a Bernd Leno own goal gave The Toffees victory.

David Moyes’ side are now up to eighth in the table, just two points behind their city rivals Liverpool, while Fulham sit 10th.
