Sam Kerr to leave Chelsea at end of Women's Super League season

The Australia forward joined Chelsea in 2020, and played an influential part in a golden period for The Blues.

Kerr picked up five Women’s Super League titles, three Women’s FA Cups and a trio of Women’s League Cups.

"When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time [against Manchester United this Saturday], I just feel happy," said Kerr.

"Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could."

The one major trophy to evade Kerr at club level is the UEFA Women’s Champions League, with Chelsea beaten by Barcelona in the 2021 final in Gothenburg.

Kerr missed out on a WSL title in the 2024/25 season after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury in early 2024 that sidelined the forward for 20 months.

The 32-year-old returned to action in September of last year and with one game remaining in the season - at home to Manchester United on Saturday - Kerr has 16 goals in 29 appearances this term.

Kerr set a personal milestone earlier in the season, as her goal in a 3-1 win at Leicester City took her to the top of Chelsea's WSL’s all-time scoring chart. She has scored 115 goals for Chelsea, one shy of Fran Kirby's record for the club.

After her departure was confirmed, Kerr said: ”Obviously, there's a little bit of sadness. It’s leaving Chelsea, leaving the club where I've been for so long, leaving my team-mates, leaving the fans. 

”The only thing that comes to my mind is remembering all the happy moments, the fun moments, and just feeling really proud.

”Chelsea have done so much for me. I've had so many amazing people on my journey help me, and I've played every day with the best players in the world week in, week out. I've grown heaps as a player.

”I couldn't have dreamed of all the stuff we've achieved together. Couldn't have believed the stuff I've achieved on a personal level. I just feel really lucky that I was here, and although I've changed as a player and a tiny bit as a person, I feel like I'm still the same person, just with a whole heap of memories from this amazing club.”

There has been no confirmation on Kerr’s next move, but she indicated it could be outside of London.

”London's been my home for six-and-a-half years," Kerr said. ”I've made some incredible lifelong friends, not only within the football club but outside of it too. I think the people are probably what I'll miss most about everything here in London.

”My team-mates, my closest friends who have supported me, my coaches, the medical team, the security guards, the kitchen ladies, the groundsmen, the kitmen.

”I think for me, that's the hardest part. I'm going to miss the people.”
