Bayern Munich 1-1 Celtic: Alphonso Davies nets last-gasp goal to secure Last 16 spot and break Celtic hearts (Agg 3-2)

Bayern Munich scraped into the UEFA Champions League Last 16 after rescuing a late 1-1 draw to break heroic Celtic’s hearts at Allianz Arena.

Vincent Kompany’s German giants looked to manage the game after winning the first leg 2-1 in Scotland, but were stunned just past the hour when Nicolas Kuhn broke the deadlock on the night and levelled the tie on aggregate with an ice-cool finish.

The hosts toiled but avoided extra-time in the fourth-minute of stoppage time when substitute Alphonso Davies bundled home a rebound from close range to clinch a 3-2 success on aggregate.

The visitors had the better of the early chances with Kuhn and Daizen Maeda failing to convert some gilt-edged openings.

Bayern threatened occasionally with Harry Kane hitting the crossbar on the stroke of half time. However, the England striker, who was a doubt prior to kick off, was replaced at the interval and the Bundesliga giants missed him with a lack of presence in the penalty area in the second half.

Former Bayern reserve winger, Kuhn made it a nervy evening for the home crowd with his smart finish and there was clear relief at the full-time whistle as Davies’ goal earned a last-16 tie against Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen.

Next up, Celtic visit sixth-placed Hibernian in the Scottish Premiership on Saturday lunchtime. Bundesliga leaders Bayern are at home to third-placed Frankfurt on Sunday.

MARTIN O’NEILL: "This is not Celtic bias. I thought they were absolutely fantastic from start to finish," he said pitch-side at the Allianz.

"Celtic at least should have got through to extra time, if nothing else. They were magnificent, they couldn’t have done much more."

NEIL LENNON: "I can only echo what Martin said. I’m so proud of the team, it was a privilege to be here and watch them play. It’s an intimidating arena, but they created chances in the first half and then they got the goal and defended heroically.

"Bayern’s reaction was pretty good, they piled on the pressure (and got the goal), but at the least Celtic deserved extra time."

"Probably one of the cruellest (nights)," he told Amazon Prime. "The performance the players gave, they gave absolutely everything. We pushed a Bayern side right to the death with the last kick of the ball.

"It’s cruel, but you don’t always get what you deserve. I’m so, so proud of the players and the way we played.

"We gave absolutely everything and we come off the pitch with no regrets."

Bayern get the job done to secure their spot in the draw for the last 16 on Friday morning – but they left it very late after The Hoops threatened one of their greatest ever European nights.

The six-time European champions were never at their best, but did the heavy-lifting in the first leg with a 2-1 win at Parkhead and remain unbeaten in their last past 21 Champions League home matches.

The German giants have now reached the last 16 for a 17th season in a row and will meet either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen next.

In contrast, a proud but heartbroken Celtic must now turn their full attention to the domestic scene where they are firmly on course for a 12th Scottish Premiership title in the past 13 seasons and a 55th overall after coming up short in their first UCL knockout tie for 12 years.
