Paris Saint-Germain have launched something of a revolutionary war against the Premier League in this season’s UEFA Champions League, and Arsenal are next in their sights.

The Ligue 1 side face The Gunners over two legs in a bid to reach the final for just the second time in their history.

Arsenal’s run to this stage has been impressive, including their vanquishing of holders and 15-time winners Real Madrid in the last round, but PSG will have little reason to hold any fear given their own record against Premier League opposition in the competition already this season.

Coincidentally, the two teams have already met in the league phase, with Arsenal picking up a 2-0 win at Emirates Stadium, but the French powerhouse have improved markedly since that match way back in the autumn.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Aston Villa have all been brushed aside, with Luis Enrique’s team looking to make it a clean sweep against all four of this year’s English top-flight representatives.

With that in mind, here is a look at PSG’s history against teams from across the channel in this competition.

What is PSG’s overall record against English clubs in the UEFA Champions League?

PSG in Champions League history have played 30 matches against Premier League opposition, winning 10, drawing seven and losing 13.

They’ve progressed from four of their eight knockout stage ties to date.

This season, that record is three wins, three defeats and no draws – however, it must be pointed out that the defeats to Liverpool and Villa came in ties where they still progressed, and are therefore somewhat inconsequential.

What has happened this season so far against English sides?

Arsenal – League phase – 0-2 defeat

The Gunners needed goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka to secure a largely comfortable 2-0 victory early on in the league phase.

PSG had their moments but were ultimately second best on the night.

Manchester City – League phase – 4-2 win

PSG’s resurgence in the competition was arguably kick-started in a potentially do-or-die encounter with Manchester City.

The two had flattered to deceive up until that point with the losing side at serious risk of being eliminated before the knockout stage.

Things looked bleak in Paris as Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland fired City into a quick-fire 2-0 lead after the break, but PSG found themselves level within five minutes through Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola.

Joao Neves completed the turnaround before Goncalo Ramos put the icing on the cake in stoppage time.

Liverpool – Round of 16 – 1-1 aggregate, 4-1 win on penalties

After dominating for much of the first leg at the Parc des Princes, Luis Enrique's side were hit with a Harvey Elliott sucker-punch in the dying minutes, leaving them a huge task in the second leg.

PSG were up to it, however, and stood firm after Dembele levelled the tie at Anfield, eventually forcing penalties.

Gianluigi Donnarumma saved two spot-kicks in the shootout as his side booked a place in the last eight.

Aston Villa – Quarter-finals – 5-4 aggregate win

PSG’s class told in the first leg as fantastic strikes from Desire Doue and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia saw them come from a goal down to lead.

Nuno Mendes’ decisive third in stoppage time looked to have taken the tie away from Villa and a fast start at Villa Park saw Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes extend their lead to 5-1.

However, cracks did start to show as Youri Tielemans, John McGinn and Ezri Konsa gave Villa more than a little bit of hope, but PSG held on to advance, despite losing 3-2 on the night.

2004/05

Chelsea (H) - Group stage – 0-3 defeat

PSG were swept aside by a rampant Chelsea thanks to a John Terry header and a Didier Drogba brace, his second coming via a stunning free kick.

Chelsea (A) - Group stage – 0-0 draw

With the Blues already through to the next round, Jose Mourinho fielded a second-string team who held PSG – desperately needing a win – to a draw.

2013/14

Cheslea - Quarter-finals – 3-3 aggregate, away goals defeat

The first of a trilogy of knockout ties in successive seasons between these two sides.

Ezequiel Lavezzi, a David Luiz own goal and Javier Pastore’s stoppage-time strike secured a comfortable 3-1 win in the first leg but Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea turned things around with a 2-0 victory at home – the second from Demba Ba coming with just two minutes to play – to advance.

2014/15

Chelsea - Round of 16 – 3-3 aggregate, away goals win

PSG were able to avenge their defeat from the previous year, this time with the away goals rule working in their favour.

Edinson Cavani cancelled out Branislav Ivanovic’s opener at the Parc des Princes to take a 1-1 draw to Stamford Bridge.

After Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s early red card, Gary Cahill thought he’d potentially sent Chelsea through when he scored with 10 minutes to play, until former Blue David Luiz – now playing in Paris - equalised to send the match to extra time.

Thiago Silva conceded a penalty, which Eden Hazard converted to put Chelsea in front again, but the Brazilian (who coincidentally would later join the west London side) turned from villain to hero when his late looping header sent PSG through in dramatic fashion.

2015/16

Chelsea - Round of 16 – 4-2 aggregate win

PSG got the better of The Blues yet again as the two met for the third season in a row.

A deflected Ibrahimovic free-kick and Cavani’s clever finish sealed a 2-1 home win, and it was the same result at Stamford Bridge thanks Adrien Rabiot and Ibrahimovic once more.

Manchester City - Quarter-final – 3-2 aggregate defeat

Ibrahimovic and Rabiot again were on target in the first leg, but goals from Kevin De Bruyne and Fernandinho meant City were able to take a decent 2-2 draw back to Manchester, where De Bruyne’s long-range stunner punched City’s ticket to the semis.

2016/17

Arsenal (H) - Group stage – 1-1 draw

Cavani headed PSG in front inside a minute, and the home side threatened to run riot, missing several big chances to extend their lead.

Their profligacy was punished late on as Alexis Sanchez salvaged a draw for The Gunners.

Arsenal (A) - Group stage – 2-2 draw

Cavani again put PSG in front before an Olivier Giroud penalty levelled things up.

Marco Verratti’s own goal made it 2-1 to Arsenal before Lucas Moura headed in to see the sides draw again.

2018/19

Liverpool (A) - Group stage – 2-3 defeat

A thriller at Anfield saw PSG battle back from 2-0 down as Thomas Meunier and Kylian Mbappe thought they’d silenced the home fans as they cancelled out first-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and James Milner.

However, thinking they’d escaped with a draw, Roberto Firmino’s fantastic solo strike gave Liverpool all three points in stoppage time.

Liverpool (H) - Group stage – 2-1 win

Juan Bernat and Neymar goals saw PSG secure a vital win in the penultimate game of the group stage to help them finish top ahead of The Reds.

Manchester United - Round of 16 – 3-3 aggregate away goals defeat

Most people would have thought 2-0 first leg win at Old Trafford was enough to book a quarter-final spot but United had other ideas, roaring back to win 3-1 in Paris, with Marcus Rashford scoring the decisive penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

2020/21

Manchester United (H) - Group stage – 1-2 defeat

Bruno Fernandes fired United ahead from the spot in Paris, although PSG thought they’d nicked a draw after Anthony Martial put through his own goal.

However, PSG tormentor-in-chief Rashford snatched a win with just three minutes left on the clock.

Manchester United (A) - Group stage – 3-1 win

One of PSG's better European displays with Neymar in sparkling form as he opened the scoring early on.

Rashford (of course) equalised before Marquinhos restored the advantage after the break and Neymar wrapped up the win in stoppage time.

Manchester City - Semi-final – 1-4 aggregate defeat

With a second successive final in their sights, PSG could not have asked for better start in the home leg when Marquinhos opened the scoring, but five reckless second-half minutes saw De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez turn the game in City’s favour.

A Mahrez double at the Etihad then condemned PSG to a humbling exit.

2021/22

Manchester City (H) - Group stage – 2-0 win

Idrissa Gana Gueye and Lionel Messi were on the scoresheet as PSG comfortably overcame the Premier League champions on home soil.

Manchester City (A) - Group stage – 1-2 defeat

Despite Mbappe giving them the lead at the Etihad, PSG would come unstuck courtesy of goals from Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus’ winner.

2023/24

Newcastle United (A) - Group stage – 1-4 defeat

PSG were torn apart on a raucous night at St James’ Park as Miguel Almiron and Dan Burn put The Magpies 2-0 up in the first half.

Sean Longstaff added a third after the break and while Lucus Hernandez pulled one back, Fabian Schar completed the rout late on.

Newcastle United (H) - Group stage – 1-1 defeat

It’s difficult to call what happened in the return match revenge but PSG’s controversial 98th-minute equalising penalty from Mbappe did ultimately mean they advanced to the knockouts at Newcastle’s expense.

What about other European competitions?

PSG’s first encounter with an English side in European competition came in the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup when they faced Arsenal at the semi-final stage.

A 1-1 draw in Paris preceded a 1-0 defeat, as The Gunners advanced to the final where they went on to lift the trophy after beating Parma.

Three years later, they faced another Premier League assignment in the final four of the same competition as they took on Liverpool. This time, it was the French side who came out on top, winning the first leg 3-0 at home and narrowly escaping Anfield with a 2-0 defeat.

But despite being holders, they were beaten 1-0 by Barcelona in the subsequent final.

Long before their series of Champions League epics, PSG travelled to Manchester City in a more low-key group stage match in the final season of the UEFA Cup before rebranding as the UEFA Europa League. The match finished 0-0 at the Etihad.
