ARSENAL MAKE STATEMENT WITH DOMINANT WIN OVER BAYERN

Arsenal’s sensational start to the season continued as they beat Bayern Munich 3-1 at the Emirates to make a major statement in the UEFA Champions League.

In a contest between the top two sides in the competition pre-match, it was a tightly-fought first half, with Jurrien Timber scoring for The Gunners, before 17-year-old Lennart Karl equalised.

The second half was where Arsenal outplayed Bayern and showcased their dominance, though it took them a while to make it count on the scoreboard.

Then came two quick-fire goals, as Noni Madueke tapped home at the back post from Riccardo Calafiori’s perfect ball, with the pair fresh onto the field.

Eight minutes later and the game was wrapped up by another super sub, as Gabriel Martinelli scored his fourth Champions League goal in as many games, capitalising on a speedy counter and poking the ball past Manuel Neuer, who will surely be the only person who knows why he was almost at the halfway line.

Come full-time and the difference between the two sides had been laid bare. Arsenal are the team to beat in England and now in Europe, as they sit top of the tree in both.

For Bayern, it is a first defeat since the FIFA Club World Cup and they will not be at panic stations by any stretch, given they still remain third in the standings.

Arsenal face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday as they look to extend their lead over their London rivals to nine points.

RICE SPEAKS ABOUT FEELING IN STOMACH

Player of the match Declan Rice spoke to TNT Sports about the "feeling in the stomachs" of the Arsenal players before this game got underway and of Mikel Arteta's emphasis on the importance of communication.

He said: "He just spoke about the importance of communication.

"That is so important, it has to be constant communication, because, especially when you have got Harry Kane dropping from striker all the way to the edge of the box.

"There are so many things and he spoke about the power of communication and tonight, you could feel that there was something in the stomach, everyone was bang up for it and it was another special European night.

[On it feeling different this year in the group] "Yeah definitely, I think so, I think there are a lot more leaders in the team now, I think there are a lot of players who have been here for quite a while and know what it takes to play for this club.

"Obviously we have been in a lot of title races and that hurts that feeling of not always being able to get over the line and we know how important it is every single game, we are just taking it one game at a time, there is a hunger and desire in us to win every game."

SOME WORDS FROM THE MATCH WINNER

Noni Madueke, like all of these Arsenal players, had a night to remember tonight, scoring his first UEFA Champions League goal and first Arsenal goal at the same time.

He has already cast one eye on Sunday's clash with former club Chelsea.

The England winger said: "It's amazing to be fair. Couldn't have picked a better game. As an attacker you want to hit the ground running straight away, sometimes you have to wait.

"I'm so happy the team got the win as well.

"It's an incredible statement. We know the work we put in, every single day, we're so together, we go into these games now with confidence we'll get the job done. We've got another big one on Sunday.

[On unfair comments when he signed] "It was a little factor for sure. I'm a confident player so I don't really like anyone telling me I can't do something. It's really my team-mates and the staff, how they've taken to me, that's the real reason I want to do my thing here and help us win trophies.

[On Chelsea game] "I guess we'll see on Sunday, first versus second, they're a top team, we're a top team."

Darren Fletcher certaintly thinks it is a win the whole of Europe will look at and stand up.
