VAN DIJK THE HERO AS LIVERPOOL LATE-SHOW SINKS ATLETICO IN FIVE-GOAL EPIC
Virgil van Dijk headed a last-gasp winner as Liverpool once again struck late to seal a 3-2 victory after Atletico Madrid hit back from 2-0 down in another UEFA Champions League thriller at Anfield.
All eyes were on Alexander Isak ahead of kick off as Arne Slot handed The Reds’ British record transfer signing his debut.
However, it was Mohamed Salah who soon stole the early spotlight as his fourth minute free kick was fortuitously deflected home by Andy Robertson.
The Egyptian was celebrating a landmark 250th goal in English club football just two minutes later when he surged in from the right, played a one-two with Ryan Gravenberch and fired a composed finish into the far corner.
Isak showed his quality with some slick link-up and a couple of smart efforts on goal, but the Kop was muted slightly on the stroke of half-time when Marcos Llorente pulled one back.
Isak was replaced just prior to the hour in a much more keenly-contested second half and Atletico thought they had earned a draw when Llorente’s deflected volley flew past Alisson nine minutes from time.
But Liverpool grabbed a late winner for the fifth straight game when Van Dijk powered home a right-wing corner, leading Atletico boss Diego Simeone to explode in a rage that led to him being sent off.

THE TNT SPORTS EXPERTS REACT TO ANOTHER LIVERPOOL LATE SHOW
Michael Owen: "That was just incredible. I mean what a finish to the game. Fair play to Atletico Madrid, they made a real game of it. I thought it could have been a total onslaught after the first five or six minutes. But Liverpool came back into it, they were threatening at the Kop end from set pieces.
"Konate could have scored just before that (VVD winner) – but what a header, what a finish to the game, brilliant, absolutely brilliant."
Steve Mcmanaman: "Liverpool were really dangerous right at the end of the game.
"His (VVD) header was wonderful wasn’t it? What a way to win the game... the Champions League, a very exciting first game, so let’s hope it all continues."
